Story Line: Calum is your ex-boyfriend. It's been 6 months since you've broken up and things just weren't going well for you at all: school, love, family, everything was just a mess. You were a mess. Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, you receive the worst news of your life and find absolutely no one to take comfort from but him.
Your 7am alarm rang off loudly from your bedside table, forcing your eyelids to open and your hand to smack the noisy device off. You groaned as you adjusted your eyes to the light that engulfed the room. Summers in Sydney were always hot and the sun relentlessly shined throughout the day. Growing up in London your whole life, you were used to a gloomy, rainy weather every day but once you moved out to Australia for university, you've come to see more sun than rain. You sighed loudly, however, as you saw the sun shine. Perhaps, rain would be good now, it would be the better match to your mood: cold and sad.
It took a full strong effort to push yourself out of bed and prepare for school. God knows how much you didn't want to go, how much you just wanted to stay in bed, or better yet, to go back home to London. These past 6 months have been total shit for you. Your major classes were getting more difficult so you constantly stayed up late and ate less. 6 months ago, you also broke up with your boyfriend of 3 years, and everything went downhill from there. Being a student in a country you didn't grow up in, Calum was your pilar to lean on but when you two broke up, it's like you lost that one constant thing you had in Australia. Sure, you had friends but it was only Calum who knew you well enough. You were more homesick now and found yourself making more skype calls to your family in London.
As soon as you finished eating breakfast and cleaned up the dishes, you got showered and prepared to leave for all your morning classes. You basically just sat there for your two classes and the only classes you had for the day. You focused much of your attention to the professors giving their long lectures in front, scribbling down as much notes as you can.
You got home at around 1pm. You heated the small bowl of pasta you had kept on the fridge. It was when you were waiting for the microwave to ding when you got the phone call that you least expected and never wanted to hear.
"She's gone, Y/N. Nan's passed away" you heard your mum say on the other end of the line. It was like you went deaf but heard everything at the same time also. It took your mum to repeat it thrice before you had asked her to stop. Your vision had gone blurry from all the tears coming out. Your grandmother had passed away. All your life you were so close to her, she was even the one who pushed you to take the scholarship in Sydney. You knew she was getting old and slowly weakening but not having any diagnosed sickness, you never really thought this was coming. You felt your world fall apart, so much so that you slipped down from the kitchen counter and sat on the floor. You had asked your mum to explain everything and she did but the only thing that you remember her saying was that when they had checked on her in the middle of the night, her heart had stopped beating and she had peacefully passed in her sleep.
You didn't know how to take it. Your mum said to stay strong and that she was willing to talk you through it but you had asked her for some alone time. When you had put the phone down, you cried and screamed. Your chest was tight and for the first time in a long time, it was getting physically painful to cry. You didn't get it, why would she just leave like that? You were still skyping with her two days ago and she was still responding, giving you her bright smile. Nothing just made sense. You looked up and noticed that the microwave was already off but your appetite was long gone now, you just wanted to lie down and cry. Your legs felt like jelly as you walked to the living room; your body wanted to cry more but you were stopping yourself. Slightly unaware of what you were doing, you dialled Calum's number on your phone and prayed to God he would pick up. 7 rings had already came through and you were losing hope
"Hello?" he answered awkwardly but cautiously
You shut your eyes at the sound of his voice, you hadn't heard it in 6 months. You probably would've froze but you told yourself not to
"C-Cal?" Your voice broke in a really soft whisper
"Y/N?" He answered, he knew that voice, "are you alright?"
"no" you breathed out, "Cal, I know I'm like that last call you expected but I seriously don't know who else to run to" You started to sob this time
"Y/n, what happened? You're freaking me out"
"Nan, Cal. Nan's... gone" You said the last word in a squeak, it felt even weirder to say it
"What? When?.... Why??" Calum was confused. He knew your grandmother well and always thought she was such a lively woman
"I– I don't know. She just died in her sleep and I—" You broke down now. You wanted to tell him you needed him but you didn't want him to think you were bothering him so you just cried. Everythin was just going so wrong right now
"Okay, okay. Y/N, where are you right now?" His tone suddenly changed to a more alert one
"i'm home" you said weakly
"Okay. Look, do me a favor and don't do anything stupid, please? I'm going there in 5 minutes. Okay? We'll get through this together. Just wait for me, okay?"
"yeah"
Just like that, the phone call was done and you were back to the eerily silent home and once again, you felt so alone
