Kaenisa hurried down the hallway along with her mother, who had barged into the room fifteen minutes ago and pushed her off the bed.

Irritation and exhaustion gnawed at her, the grogginess from being woken up from a deep sleep making her head almost too heavy to hold up. It had been rather confusing Shefali had started yelling at her to get suited up and, to quote, 'look alive'.

Kaenisa gritted her teeth.

When she had asked why she had to do that at one in the morning, her mother only launched into a long rant, essentially insulting the existence of everyone they'd met during the past few months.

But Kaenisa had only heard two words. 'Mutant' and 'Attack', which was enough to make the blood in her veins erupt like a volcano.

Even now, she could feel a vein ticking against her temple, head throbbing.

Those bloody mutants! They were the reason her life was like this right now, the reason why her mind was so fucked up and most importantly, the reason why she was dressed in a combat suit and not asleep in her bed.

By the time she dragged herself to the lobby after grabbing an improved version of the guns they used to kill the monsters using her, Sarina and Rolan's blood, along with her mother, everyone had already gathered.

Well, everyone except the two lovebirds and Zaira, who arrived minutes after she did.

Rolan seemed worse than herself, and Sarina looked like she had seen a ghost. Both of them had one thing in common.

Their faces bore a grave expression, lips pressed into a grim line. It was as if they'd heard the news of their execution. And yet, it wasn't fear. Doubt, anxiety and angst, maybe, but not fear.

There was one more thing that stood out to her. Honestly, it was hard to miss. The tense air stretching between the two of them. It was strikingly out of character given how in love they were.

Just what had happened between the two of them?

But now wasn't the time or place to ask that question because right now, filthy monsters were waiting to be killed.

"Now that everyone's here, let's go over the plan, shall we?" General Cazek said, looking rather dazed.

Something she had never seen before.

Come to think of it, it seemed to be a similar case with her mother. Both of her parents were avoiding eye contact with each other.

How interesting.

"We'll be teleporting into the Head Office of a temporary facility set up by our people. It's an abandoned building at the end of an alleyway, preferred mostly by the homeless or the mafia but we've made sure they cannot enter as of now so there shouldn't be much interference by or danger to the people." Asher spoke.

"What kind of facility?" She asked.

"The kind that has prevented a hoard of mutants from taking over the city up till now." Her father said.

"There has been a little....mishap, so we're gonna go take care of it before it turns into a catastrophe." Asher interjected.

Kaenisa found it to be quite hard to believe that they needed eight people to handle a little mishap.

"A perimeter has already been set up and the only thing we have to do is get the situation under control. Any questions?"

Once everyone was on board, they were taken to a room with a large, complicated concentric pattern painted onto the ground.
She recognised it as a teleportation rune, used mostly for teleporting to far away distances with more people without the weirder having to drain themselves completely.
