"Mama!" I called through the house. I needed to get some things off my chest and I knew she would be there.
"Ma!" I walked into the kitchen to see pops and mama getting freaky.
"Oh my God. Baby go into the den I'll get you a snack." I told Simone. "Ma!"
"Girl don't even start I'm grown and you walked into my house. Now what do you want?"  She sat down at the kitchen table after fixing herself up.
"I'm going to play with Simi while yall talk."
"Go wash your hands first." I told Mr. Carter. He waved me off before going to see his grand baby. He thought I was playing but, I was too serious.
"Mama you wouldn't believe the day I had." I went to the fridge and grabbed a beer.
"What's wrong baby."
"Your son."
"What do you mean by my son? I haven't seen that boy in years."
"He's back mama." I took a long gulp from it, letting the burning sensation take over.
"You mean to tell that nappy headed boy is back and he didn't tell me. When I see him I'm personally whooping his ass."  She ranted. I took another gulp and then began chugging it.
"What he do this time?"
"What hasn't he done? He expects everything to just go back to normal because he's back. Like those last couple years never happened." I felt a tear begin to fall but, I sucked it up. I refuse to shed another tear behind him.
"You know what hurts the most?" I went to the cabinet and grabbed a bottle vodka.
"What baby?"
"He told me he loved me." I took the bottle and chunked it not caring where it landed.
"I could have forgiven him if he gave me space or even tried to reach out to me. But he sat there and lied in my face and says 'he loves me'. I'm finally happy mama why does he have to ruin it?"
"Hush now sweetie." She said holding me. "Listen, God never gives you more than you can handle. He gave you a beautiful daughter, a thriving business and a family that loves you. Now this is a test. He put Drew back in your life for a reason and I think you owe it to yourself to figure out what that reason maybe. Now I'm not saying you have to be with him. I'm just saying hear him out. He could have a good explanation for why he did what he did." I nodded my head and buried it into her chest.
"I love you so much and thankful for you." She lifted up my head and looked me in my eyes.
"I love you too and I mean it." She kissed my hairline then ran her fingers through it, like my mother use to do when she was alive.
"Now go upstairs and I'll wake you when the food is ready. I know your going to have a headache soon."
"Yes ma'am." Went upstairs and heard whispering.
"Why is mommy upset?" Simone asked.
"Grown folks business child." I laid in one of the guest rooms. I soon drifted off to sleep until I felt tiny hands wrap around me. I smiled to myself and snuggled up to her.
"I want you to be happy mommy."
"As long as you love me I'm happy."
As I let sleep take over I thought about what mama had said and she was right. I just needed time to heal and recover.
"Boy how in the hell do you come back and not say shit to the woman who carried you for nine months." I heard mama yell.
"I don't care if you are sorry you should have called me when first came back." I creeped closer to the door to listen on her conversation.
"I miss you boy you know that right but, I'm truly disappointed in you. Your decision are slowly catching up to you and you're going to eventually have to tell her."
"Ok baby see you soon." There was a long pause before I heard her move around again. I laid back in the bed and pretended to be sleep. She came into the room and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Wake up baby, there is food on the table if you want it."
"Thank you." I stretched and woke up Simi  so we could eat. She had all my favorites prepared fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, spinach and German chocolate cake for desert.
"This looks amazing, thank you." I hugged her and Pops before taking my seat.
"Ok now let's eat." Pops said reaching over the table grabbing some chicken.
"Now Dominic you know better. Bless the food." She glared at him giving him the look that scares me and I'm twenty three.
"Lord please keep me from slapping this woman." He mumbled.
"And lord if he slap me you going to need to make some room for him."
"Man stop playing Angela." He said as he smacked his lips.
"Try me."
"I'm ready to eat nana."
"Ok baby." She started fixing her plate when the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it." I told Pops before he could get up. I opened the door to see this nigga with a big smile on his face.
"Oh hell no!" I said closing the door in his face.
"Who was that?" Pops asked.
"Your son."
"Then go let him in." I walked to the door and opened out of respect. I sat down at the table and began to dig in.
"Hey mom, hey pops." Drew came in the kitchen and tried to hug them.
"Nigga don't hey pops me. You ain't heard of a phone before. You better be lucky I didn't have one of my boys kill yo ass." Now Mr. Carter may seem old but, for a fifty year old man he still got it going on. He use to be a kingpin back in the day and still got connects. One phone call and it's over.
"I'm sorry pops." He sighed taking a seat next to me.
"That's all you'll ever be. A sorry as-"
"That's enough Dominic." Mama glared.
"You know what fuck this I'm out." He grabbed his stuff and stormed out and Simone began crying and trying to chase after him.
"Stay with grandma." I ran outside trying to catch up with him.
"Drew!" I ran to his car and started banging on it. "Drew!" He rolled down the window. His whole body was shaking and his face was red.
"Please don't drive while you're like this." He still had his hand on the steering wheel.
"Talk to me." I reached inside the car and unlocked the door from the inside. "You at least owe me that much. Talk to me. I don't want you to shut down." I turned off the ignition and sat in his lap. He remained in the same position not saying a word. I laid my head across his chest and listened to breath start even out.
"I'm sorry Des, I'm truly sorry." He finally spoke.
"What are you apologizing for?"
"For leaving you but, I have my reasons. You know I wouldn't do anything to hurt you on purpose."
"Can we not talk about this now." I sighed.
"No we need to talk about this." He ran his hands through my hair.
"Remember that day when you were shot?" I slowly nodded my head reminiscing on the events. "That same day I found out that their were multiple people looking for me because I killed one of their bosses. The people I did business with threatened to kill you and my daughter. Little did I know the one person I thought I was closet to me would be in on it." He sighed still playing in my hair. "So I took care of it the best way I knew how and I left." I looked into his eyes and I could tell he was hurt. "The worst part of it all I lost everything man. I'm trying, I really am but I don't know if I can hold on."
"Don't talk like that. We need you. As hard as it is for me to say it I need you especially your daughter. Simone needs you in her life more than ever."
"Thank you." I slowly rubbed my thumb across his face. He leaned in but, my phone started ringing. I looked down and saw it was Shawn calling.
"Hey baby can I call you back?"
"Sure thing beautiful, I didn't want anything."
"Bye." I felt my face turn red before I was snapped back into reality.
"I can tell they make you happy." He chuckled darkly.
"Drew don't start."
"It's cool." He shrugged. "Just remember who had you first." He wrapped his ringer around mine and saw the king and queen tattoos we got for my birthday.
