"Come on, Eddie, we're going to be late!" Ann yelled, pounding on the bedroom door. "Do you have anything for me to borrow?"
Eddie opened the door, holding a black crewneck and a black and white flannel. "You can wear these. It's the smallest thing I have, plus just a random flannel. None of my jeans will fit you, unfortunately. So you're stuck in yesterday's ones, I guess." He said as he threw the clothing at her, holding some shoes in his hands. "Also, here. These were my old Converses from when I was in middle school. They're a size nine, so it should be closer to what you wear now."
"You're a life-saver, Eddie," Ann stated, putting on the stuff he'd given her. "I'll give this back to you later, alright?"
"don't worry about it; you can keep it," he remarked, smirking at her. "Anyway, tonight's the final hellfire meeting, I'm also meeting up with Chrissy today, but I'll call you later tonight. I know you said you wanted to go home, but you're welcome here, alright?
"My dad was supposed to go out of town tomorrow, I'm pretty sure he'll be locked away in his office, and until he's left, I'm just going to stay in my room. Call my line later, not the house one, remember." Ann told him, pointing to her number she'd scribbled on a piece of paper and left on his bedside table.
"Yes, anyway, let's go now, aren't you the one who was worried about being late? It's just a pep rally; I don't get what's the big deal," Eddie commented, grabbing his car keys and opening the door.
"Let's go. Being on time for once won't hurt you," snickered Ann, stepping past Eddie and climbing in the car.
"Good morning, Hawkins high!" yelled basketball captain Jason Carver, grabbing the mic in front of him. "First off, I'd like to thank each and every one of you. Without your support, we wouldn't be here!"
He took a breath and walked closer to the stands, "So give yourself a big hand!"
"Do you always come to these?" whispered Eddie into her ear as Jason spoke. "I hate them."
There's a vague memory of some emotional speech given and then linked to how it could help the basketball team win a game, but most of it is blurry. Ann and Eddie kept snickering and whispering during the rally. Walking out together when it ended.
"Alright, so I'm meeting up with Chrissy later. We'll be at that table in the woods? The one past the bleachers? If you want to talk to her after, maybe try and catch her as we leave." Eddie told her, standing in the middle of a hallway. "I'll call you later, alright?"
"Watch out for her, alright?" Ann asked, grabbing his hand. "I'm not sure she's okay. She struggled a little with her mother when we were good friends, so I think it's gotten worse."
The two parted ways then. Ann tried to catch Chrissy but was held back when a teacher asked her to stay back to talk. She crossed Eddie again that day, who informed her he would bring Chrissy to the trailer to give her "something," and he'd make sure she was ok.
Taking the bus home was weird. It had been a while since Eddie had started dropping her off, so climbing back in the yellow vehicle made her miss the boy's company.
Once she got home, her father and his car were nowhere to be seen, so Ann was grateful. She ate supper and worked on some homework, but the night went on, and Ann never got any news from Eddie.
She waited, sitting on her bed with the pink phone sat on a pillow next to her. Eddie usually kept his word, so the fact he hadn't called at all was a little bit weird. She figured he'd gone to drop her off, and after the day he had, he'd just forgotten. It wasn't every day you dealt drugs to a star cheerleader.
She fell asleep, and Eddie never called.
