"Stay with her, Sinclair," Jason said as the other boys left the car to pound on the door to Dustin's house.
"I'm sorry you've been dragged into this. I don't know what's gotten into him. He's not like this usually." The young boy said, looking at the trio outside.
"Why are you doing this, Lucas? I know you go to Hellfire; I've seen you there before. This isn't like you." She said, trying to reason with him.
"I know, I just don't know what to do. I don't think he did it, but Chrissy was Jason's girlfriend, and I want to... help." He said, hesitating on the last word.
"Staying here, in this car, is the furthest thing from helping you can do. For Jason or Dustin. If I were you, I'd pick the right side quickly, Sinclair."
Lucas looked at her for a couple of seconds before sighing and opening his car door. "Follow me, quick." He said, crouching.
He made his way around the house and quickly found the unlocked window that led to Dustin's room. He promptly made his way in and grunted, falling to the floor. From afar, Ann could hear Jason question the two other boys about where she and Lucas were.
She poked her head through the window, "Hurry up! They'll be here any minute." She whisper-shouted at the kid.
He ran to the complicated radio, computer-looking thing and turned it on, picking up the device and speaking into it.
"Dustin, this is Lucas. Do you copy, Dustin?" he spoke into the thing. Then, a couple of seconds later, it screeched back, and a boy replied to him.
"Lucas, where the hell have you been?" said Dustin, and Ann smiled.
"Just listen, are you guys looking for Eddie?" he questioned Dustin, turning around to look at Ann.
The radio beeped, and Dustin's voice came through again, "Yeah, we found him, no thanks to you."
Lucas cursed under his breath and pressed the button to speak again, "You found him?"
Ann tried to listen better to his words in case Dustin would say anything about how Eddie was holding up. "A boathouse on Coal Mill Road. Don't worry; he's safe."
At the younger boy's words, Ann exhaled in relief. At least Eddie was fine. That's all that mattered to her.
"you guys know he killed Chrissy, right?" Lucas said, not looking at Ann.
"That's bullshit!" exclaimed Dustin immediately after Lucas's comment. "Eddie tried to save Chrissy."
"Then why do all the cops say he did it?" asked Lucas, trying to figure out what was happening.
"Lucas, you're so behind, it's ridiculous, okay?" an annoyed girl spoke through the radio now, "Just meet us at school. We'll explain later."
Ann whipped her head out of the window and swore when she saw Jason and his friends turning the corner to the house; their voices were getting louder.
"I'm with Ann Hopkins, and... I can't. I think some real bad shit is about to go down."
The same girl protested, asking about what would go down, but it was too late. Jason had jumped up and taken Ann's arm.
"Sinclair! What the hell are you doing?" asked the basketball captain.
"He was looking for clues. At least what he was doing was more productive than pounding on doors for hours." So replied Ann, still angry.
Andy snickered, and Patrick spoke up, "Clues? Freshman thinks he's Sherlock Holmes or something?"
The two boys high-fived, and Ann rolled her eyes at their behavior. Jason was still looking at Lucas, waiting for the boy to continue speaking.
"I found one," Lucas said, and Ann prayed he wasn't going to reveal that he knew where Eddie was hiding.
"I know where Eddie's hiding."
It looked like nothing was going to go her way. And Ann sighed, running a hand through her hair.
