Renata, Sam, Paul and Jared were slapped by heat as soon as they stepped out of the plane. Jared was clinging to Renata for dear life, it was his first time flying and needless to say, he was not a fan. Paul had slept all through the journey so he missed the three times Jared puked. Sam had not been bothered by the flight but he wouldn't say he was excited about doing it again.
Even in winter, Quintana Roo was a warm and humid place. The boys had never been in such a warm place and they were sweating profoundly. They entered the airport and after going for their bags, they were received by an older version of Renata. The boys were dumbfounded at the resemblance between the two, same eyes, face shape, smile...
"Nena" Karina said with a smile, she walked towards them and hugged Renata tightly. Renata buried her face in her mother's hair, oh, how she had missed this.
"Hola mami" Renata said softly. After they separated, Renata took her mom's hand and guided her to the boys, "mami, ellos son Sam, Paul, y Jared; guys, ella es mi mamá, Karina"
"Hola, señora" Sam said with a thick accent. Karina had gone to a bilingual school, but she had rarely used English after she graduated, so she had some trouble, Renata had asked the boys to try to use Spanish as much as possible.
"Ay, no me digas señora, me haces sentir vieja" Karina shuddered.
"Lo siento" Sam said, Karina smiled and patted his shoulder.
"Vamos, hay comida en la casa" Karina said, Renata took her mom's hand and motioned for the boys to follow them.
Karina had taken her brother's truck for them to all fit. Sam went in the front with Karina, so she could explain how the prowl worked and what they would do. Renata, Jared and Paul rode in the truck's bed. After a fourty five minute drive, they arrived to a dense part of the jungle, Karina took a left into a dirt road and drove for another half hour. In that time, Renata managed to put her short hair into pigtails and braid Paul's and Jared's hair. They passed a sign that said 'Bienvenido a Ojo de Agua', the road was made of big river rocks. There were some jaguars roaming between the people and on rooftops.
"They're patrolling" Renata told Jared and Paul, who looked with interest at the jaguars, "everyone here knows about them, so they roam freely"
"So, you live here?" Paul asked as he looked around.
"The family house is here in Ojo de Agua, I was born here, so were my brothers, but we lived in Cancún, we have a department there, we went to school there... but we spent every vacation here, my family has always led the village, so we have deep connection to the land. Ojo de Agua is what we call home" Renata told them, "many people live here year-round, so we have a school, a small hospital... there is little to no crime here, and most outsiders don't bother to come all the way here"
Renata's family house was in the far end of the village, it was built in a colonial style, with a big patio in the middle, it had two jaguar statues in the entrance, and there were kids playing around. There were people around the entrance, waiting for them to arrive. They came down of the truck and people immediately surrounded Renata, hugging her and asking her questions. The boys watched in amazement, there was so much love in this place, so much happiness. While the adults said hi to Renata, the kids that had been playing around looked at the boys with curiosity.
"Renata" one of the kids pulled on her shorts to get her attention.
"¿Qué pasa Matías?" Renata asked the little boy. He had tan skin, russet hair and light turquoise eyes.
"¿Cuál de ellos es tu novio? ¿O tienes tres novios?" Matías asked. The boys knew enough Spanish to understand Matías's question. They looked mortified. Renata laughed.
"Mi novio no vino, Mati, se quedó en Estados Unidos. Aparte, Sam y Jared tienen novias" Renata explained the ten year old boy. She then turned to some of the people around her, "vengan, los voy a presentar" they approached the boys, "Sam, Paul y Jared" Renata pointed at each and they waved, "guys, esta es mi prima Lucero" She pointed at a girl that had some familiarity with Renata, just shorter, with longer hair and a wider nose, "mi prima Pau" She pointed at a tall and skinny girl with green eyes, "mi primo Giovani," a guy with a medium complexion, black beard and light grey eyes, "mi primo Fabián," a strong guy with tan skin and hazel eyes, "mi prima Esther," a small girl that looked like Fabián, "mi primo Samuel, mi prima Valeria, mi prima Madeleine, mi primo Arturo, mi prima Victoria, mi primo Isaías, mi primo Beto, mi prima Alhelí..." Renata went on for a while, introducing most of her cousins to the guys.
"That's a lot of cousins" Jared said, he couldn't remember half of the names.
"Yeah, my grandparents had many children" Renata nodded.
"Any of them shifters?" Paul asked with curiosity.
"Yeah, all of the boys, except Beto, he's still not old enough. You actually saw Fabián and Giovani when we entered the village, Fabián was the one in the rooftop, and Giovani was the one right at the entrance" Renata told them, "Now, come on, food's probably almost ready, we have to set the table"
The four of them entered the house, it was unlike anything Sam, Paul and Jared had ever seen, the house was spacious and had a lot of natural light coming in, the house welcomed them with a nice cool breeze coming from the A.C., there were paintings hanging in the walls, and photos. For the first time, the boys looked at a picture of Renata's whole family, it was a pretty recent one. Karina looked pretty similar as they saw her then, Carlos looked exaclty the same as how they met him, they recognised Claudio, a pointy angular face with strong structure, but a warm smile, they looked at who they guessed was Daniel, he had a square face and a mischievous smile, his hair was curly but cut short, he looked like someone that would have your back no matter what, someone you could trust. Then, they saw Renata, her smile was wide and bright, her hair was long, and she had a twinkle in her eyes they had never seen before, at either side of her were two identical boys, René and Rodrigo, the three of them seemed to have an inside joke going on, René and Rodrigo had angular faces and broad shoulders, with straight noses and tan skin, Rodrigo had a scar above his left eyebrow.
"You look like a happy family" Paul mentioned.
"We were" Renata said sadly, she put her hand above the picture and stroked it softly. She then kissed her fingertips and then pressed them over René, Rodrigo and Daniel, "Claudio will be here soon, he's patrolling around the village"
They walked to the outside patio, in the back of the house. There was a long table, and Renata told them to grab the plates while she put the cutlery. Shortly after they finished, Karina and other people brought put pots and saucepans in two empty tables. The boys could say that they had never seen so much food.
