Chapter 50

Renata, it's Andrea- Jared said inside her head, Renata, I don't think she's alive- Renata heard Jared's voice breaking. Even if they were not close friends, Jared knew Andrea since they were children, they had been several times in the same classes.

"You're not getting away" Leah said behind Victoria.

"I think I am" Victoria smiled and quickly grabbed one of the two people on the floor. She held him from the neck, and smelled him, "maybe I'll get a snack before leaving, though"

Renata's heart broke when she noticed that it was Neza. He tried to open his eyes through his swollen face. Renata felt a feral feeling inside her, and a growl rumbled in her chest, echoing through the empty parking lot.

"You let go off him right now" Renata warned her.

"Or what?" Victoria laughed, "Try something and he'll end up like this one" She pushed the other body with her boot and Renata came face to face with Nina's once beautiful face, her eyes were open and empty, her face forever frozen in the middle of a scream for help.

Renata felt as if someone was physically ripping her heart out of her body. The pack seemed to be feeling her pain, as they howled in pain and shook their bodies. At some point, Renata had fallen to the ground, scraping her knees, she looked into Nina's eyes, trying to find the warmth they once held, but finding nothing at all. She grabbed Nina and held her body, trying to find any sign of life, but meeting only cold and emptiness.  Around the group and Victoria, mist started to form, and wind started to blow violently. Storm clouds formed, and lightning illuminated the sky. Rain started to fall heavily on them.

Renata... she heard Paul's voice, are you doing this?

We have to save Neza, Renata answered shortly.

"So, what is it gonna be?" Victoria mocked. Renata stood up, Victoria was partially surprised to see how her eyes seemed to burn gold.

"You are outnumbered, and outmatched. Don't do anything stupid, although that might be hard for you" Renata reminded her.

"Think about it, girl. In one moment, I can kill him, or I can turn him. I think I know which one you'd be more devastated to presence." Victoria smiled sweetly and licked a wound from which Neza was bleeding, "he has a nice taste, despite his smell"

"Get away from him!" Renata yelled at her, giving a step closer to her, she tsked and brought her teeth closer to his neck.

"Which is more valuable to you? Taking my life or preserving his?" Victoria enquired.

"Renata, don't listen to her. She is trying to trick you!" Renata was surprised to hear Neza's voice, "run, Renata, go away!"

"Neza, be quiet" Renata reprimanded him, "what about an exchange? Him for me"

What are you doing? Sam asked aggressively. You are going to get yourself killed!

We have to do something! Paul's frantic voice echoed.

Ren, don't do anything stupid, Embry intervened.

Too late, she's doing something stupid, Jared said jokingly, but obviously worried.

"And why would I want you?" Victoria laughed.

"Because they won't hurt me. But if you hurt him, I promise you, I will make you suffer, and you will have wished that I had killed you" Renata promised through gritted teeth. A flash of fear crossed Victoria's eyes and looked at Renata suspiciously.  

"You bought your friend some extra time, precious" Victoria smiled and held out her hand towards Renata.

Renata stood up and got close to Victoria. Once she was in arms' length, Victoria grabbed her by the neck and threw Neza to the ground. The wolves, who were drenched in rainwater by that moment, growled and got a little bit closer to Renata. Victoria gripped Renata's throat tighter, earning a whimper from the young girl. Paul snarled at Victoria and she smiled.
