Renata looked around once more, confirming there was no one waiting for her. She grabbed her luggage and dragged it towards the entrance. She stopped a cab and was about to ask the driver to drive her to her father's friend's house when a text arrived to her phone.
From: Mamá
Acuérdate de ir al hospital por tus medicinas. Espero el recibo del doctor.
To: Mamá
Ok
Renata sighed and rested her head in the seat. It was exhausting for her to take those medicines. She thought her mother was quite paranoid about her only daughter trying to kill herself. Renata was conscious that her suicide or rather, attempt of, would greatly hurt her family, but she didn't care, she felt dead already, without René and Rodrigo.
The taxi driver told her they had arrived and she thanked him, paying him seven dollars for the ride, he asked if she wanted him to wait but she refused, saying someone was waiting for her inside. Lie. The taxi driver, whose name, she learned, was Michael, helped her with her luggage and he took off as soon as she waved goodbye. Renata walked inside the building and asked the lady behind the desk where could she find the Psychiatric Wing.
"You just have to go upstairs and it's the last door to the right" the woman told her.
"Thanks" Renata said, "Can I leave my bag here? I'm just going for something"
"Sure thing, honey" the woman said and was going to say something else when the phone rang and she picked it up. Her face changed after a few seconds of talking with whoever had called, "I'll go tell them, hold on" the woman said, shoving the phone in Renata's hand and running away to the back of the hospital.
Renata was unsure of what to do with the phone, so she just held it as if it Eder the most fragile thing in the world. After five minutes, she had started to think about leaving the phone in the desk, go for the meds and leave. Renata was stopped by the sound of sirens reaching the hospital. Something was off, she could feel it. The young girl shook her head at what she was about to do. She channelled her powers and energy and felt as her irises started to glow until they finally changed their colour from dark brown to bright amber. There was an energy near that was similar to her people, the Itzá. Renata left the phone in the desk and walked towards the emergency room. When she entered, she immediately saw chaos. There were at least five nurses and two security guards trying to hold back a man with short hair and russet skin. He was trying to get to a woman that was on a stretcher with bandages on her face, and by the slow breaths she was taking, Renata could say she was unconscious. Those nurses and guards would not be able to hold back the man much longer, Renata decided she had to help.
"Get away" Renata told them, a guard looked at her like she was insane. How could a petite girl like her control a man over six feet tall and at least two times her weight, "I will say it one more time, get away" Renata said again, feeling her eyes glow as she used her powers to make them obey.
The man ignored the fact that the girl had just told them what to do and tried to advance towards the woman in the bed. Renata stopped him, putting her hands in his stomach, stopping him in his tracks. He seemed confused on how could a small girl stop him. He looked at her eyes and growled, but Renata didn't budge. She kept him in place as the woman was taken to surgery.
"Emily!" The man yelled, "Emily!" He repeated, about to cry, "I'm sorry" he whispered fell to his knees.
"C'mon, big guy, I'll buy you something to eat while we wait for- Emily" Renata said and helped him stand up.
"I don't want anything from you, leech" The man said, trying to walk towards Emily again. Renata stopped him.
"Okay, that's rather insulting, dude. My dad's one but I don't see the point of insulting me" Renata said, dragging him quite easily towards the cafeteria.
"Get off me! I have to go see if she's alright!" The man said but Renata's grip on his arm became stronger.
"I don't know what happened to her, but she's going to be alright, ok? Doctors know what they are doing and believe me, you are not helping her by acting as you were. They got her to surgery, so why don't you try to trust that doctors will help her" Renata told him and he reluctantly nodded.
"Your hand is warm" the man said out of the blue.
"Uh, yeah, thanks, I guess?" Renata said, knowing her skin was always warm, "I'm Renata, by the way"
"Sam, nice to meet you" they shook hands, "sorry for calling you a leech"
"It's okay, I'm not very fond of them either" Renata said casually.
"Wait, wait" Sam stopped in his tracks, they had been walking towards the cafeteria, "You know about-"
"Vampires?" Renata sort of asked, "yeah. I mean, it's rather difficult not to know about them where I come from"
"How did you know I was talking about them? Or if I knew about them?" Sam asked her, quite confused.
"Well, your tattoo gives you off a little bit. Quilete Shapeshifter?" Renata asked casually.
"Wh- How do you know I'm Quilete?" Sam was really confused by now. She seemed to know everything and it worried him.
"I just assumed you were. I did my research before coming, the Quilets descend from... wolves, right?" Renata looked up at him and saw his panicked expression, "dude, chill. I know how to keep a secret" Renata said, taking off her jacket and pulling up the sleeve of her t-shirt.
"Wait- you are a-" Sam started and she laughed.
"A shapeshifter? No. But I'm part of a prowl" Renata told him as she paid for six double hamburgers.
"What is a prowl?" The man asked, intrigued by this new girl.
"I'll explain it to you later, now let's go eat" Renata said as she took the tray with all the hamburgers, "how many do you want?" Renata asked as she set aside two for herself, for starters.
"You'll eat two of those?" Sam asked her, raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah, I'm not really hungry today" Renata said and Sam laughed, starting to like the girl.
