"You sure that's all she needs?" Arthur asked, lifting the heavy sack of groceries onto the horse. "She's known to change her mind."
"It's all she asked for," you shrugged, smiling.
He nodded and secured the sack to his horse before lifting you up suddenly onto your own.
"Arthur!" you laughed, earning a small grin from him. You wished you could stay in this moment forever.
"It's the proper thing to do," he shrugged, trying to force away his smile.
"Mhm," you smiled softly. "C'mon, I'm sure Sadie's eagerly waiting for these to arrive."
Arthur nodded and the two of you rode moderately fast to camp. The ride was calm and long, and you were thankful for it. You knew these moments were precious—and fading.
"Hey y/n?" Arthur said suddenly, causing you to look over at him.
"Yeah?"
"I...listen, I know you know that things ain't the same no more in the gang," he sighed, looking away. "But I want you to know that I have your back, okay? I really love you, y/n, and I want you to know that even though things is rough, I'm here."
"I know," you nodded, your eyes wide. "I love you too, Arthur. And my loyalty lies first and foremost with you."
A small smile appeared on his lips and he nodded gently. "Good idea."
"Thought so," you smiled at him, but he was looking far off ahead.
"I want Dutch to let the women and children go," he said, breaking the silence again. "And John, too. Jack and Abigail need 'im."
"Well I already told you, my loyalty's with you. I ain't goin' nowhere."
"Knew you'd say that," he said, his eyes wandering off again. "I was mostly talkin' 'bout the women minus you and Sadie, but she's free to go too."
"Doubt she'll go," you said, and Arthur nodded silently. Camp was already a hundred or so yards ahead, making your shoulders feel heavy with dread.
The camp looked unusually empty as you approached, and you realized a few tents were missing.
Mary-Beth and Kieran's was gone, along with the one Molly and Karen shared.
Pearson's wagon was missing his tent, and your heart felt heavy. If they were all gone, so were most of your friends.
You and Arthur hitched your horses and he grabbed Sadie's groceries.
"Can you carry these?" he asked, handing the sack to you.
You picked it up with a little extra effort and nodded, turning in the direction of Sadie's tent.
"I'm gonna go speak to Dutch," said Arthur before coughing for a short moment. "It seems some of the women already got out."
"Okay," you nodded again and lifted the sack using one of your knees; it was actually pretty heavy.
He headed off towards Dutch and you headed over to Sadie's tent. Fortunately, she was sitting inside on her bed.
"Hey, sorry about the delay," you grunted as you placed the groceries on the ground.
"That's okay," she sighed sadly.
"Are they gone? Mary-Beth, Kieran—"
"Tilly and Abigail are the only women left besides us."
You frowned to yourself, looking out of the flaps in her tent. "Things really aren't the same."
