SWIPE AND HIT PLAY FOR MUSIC!
TRIGGER WARNING
Jade's POV
•€•
June 27thPancakes fill the air of my bedroom. Soft R&B music sounds sweetly throughout the house. My mother's sweet voice graces along with the voices of the birds.
The morning feels peaceful, giving me the impression that my day will be a joyful one.
I pull myself out of bed and head straight for the bathroom. I glance at the mirror that decorates almost the entire wall and take a deep breath.
"I'm 18 now," I whisper to myself.
My birthday is finally here. Not that I've been yearning for it to come.
If anything, I rather it didn't.
For months, I've feared this day.
Well...feared the outcome. I'm not sure how it will end.
I shower and make sure to wash my hair. Maddison begged to take me out today and I agreed.
Surprisingly, my mother did too.
I step out of the shower and wrap my wet curls in a micro fiber towel. I don't have time to deep condition and I know should've washed my hair last night.
After taking care of my hygiene, I throw on an Aaliyah graphic Tee and black biker shorts. Pairing my outfit with gold jewelry and my white forces that have gold accents was next.
Taking the time to get ready is more than a routine.
But a way to slowly prepare my brain for what awaits each day.
"Babygirl!" I hear my mother scream as my footsteps become audible from the heavy shoes on my feet.
"I'm coming, Mommy," I yell back. I text Maddison to see how far she is. She's notorious for being late.
I grab my bag and head downstairs, greeting my mother with a small smile.
A smile genuine enough to earn a hug.
"Good morning, baby. Happy birthday," she smiles as she packs me into her arms.
Living in this house is weird. There are moments when my mother is the sweetest person but there are moments when she completely changes.
Especially when it comes to her husband.
She puts him before me in everything. What's worse is that she hates when I make it known.
"Thank you," I smile.
I step back and take in the beautiful breakfast laid out before me. Blueberry pancakes, with fruit and turkey bacon on the side.
A breakfast we use to make together before she got married.
How simple things were then...
"You look cute. You leaving already?" she asks twirling the two curls that frame my face. I nod. "You don't wanna eat first?" she asks.
"Yes. Everything smells so good. Thank you," I exclaim. I take a seat at the table.
Ever since the last incident, she's been overly sweet to me. She hasn't even raised her voice at me once. I think maybe it's because someone has their eyes on her now.
Gabby and Maya have been nothing short of helpful. They check on me and make sure I'm good.
I guess I am now.
I mean...nothing has happened and hopefully it stays that way.
Maddison texts that she's ten minutes away. That gives me ten minutes to pick at food I can't stomach.
