Another wave of shock reverberated through the crowd of people on the field as we realised what that meant. They definitely had someone leading them if mountain ash was involved. No way would the rogues be able to calculate an attack of this scale.
I rushed forward realising Aiden was hurt, my wolfs anger and desperation rising. We couldn't loose him, any of them. I could feel people shouting at me and trying to grab me as I ran for the ash barrier, I knew what would happen when I hit it but I had to try. Colliding with the barrier was painful, it was like being electrocuted and then nothing as you were thrown back through the air with force. I landed with a hard thud. The air knocked out of my lungs again. I rolled around trying to move as I breathed air back into my lungs at last, Hannah, Zach and Bryan had rushed over to where I landed shouting at me. They were pissed I had tried to do that. But I had to try, I couldn't just leave them there they would die if I did.
Behind the barrier the rogues who had made it there in time before the ash was spilt watched on. They knew this was a fight they weren't going to win now, we outnumbered them a lot by this point. I know that not everyone had made it this far yet though. The remaining rogues seemed to be waiting for something, they weren't hurting the wolves they had taken hostage, they were just pacing within the barrier. Some of them were watching the woods like something would come through them any minute now.
I focused my hearing in that direction, other than a few murmurs over what to do now the clearing was quiet, the wounded having been taken inside to heal. I tried to hear for something but I couldn't make out much, only the sounds of footfall. But I wasn't sure if that was escaping rogues or what. But I didn't want to take any chances. If I was going to do something it had to be now.
Pulling Hannah, Zach and Bryan to the side I whispered to them "There has to be something we can do, I can hear footfalls in the woods in the distance, and they seem to be waiting on something to happen, so whatever we are going to do it needs to be now"
Zach nodded his head to me "I know but what? Until we can get through that barrier we have nothing!" He exclaimed "This is when we really need Vince, I bet he knows something" I looked back to the rogues and our friends behind the barrier. Vince looked pale but he seemed to be OK, he was cradling a passed out Darla to his chest, Aiden sat with them. I could tell Aiden was trying to be strong for them despite the copious amounts of blood leaking from the wound on his abdomen now.
"I can't stand this, look at them." I yelled out "They're dying" I had yelled it a little louder than I expected because people on the field turned to glare at me in disapproval. There had to be something we could do I thought to myself. Studying the rogues and the barrier it seemed like if we could just get that barrier down we would be OK, we had enough numbers here to overpower the rogues before they could do any more damage.
Listening back into the woods the footfalls I heard earlier hadn't gotten distant, they had gotten closer, that means whatever or whoever they were waiting for was almost here. I know I had to act before then. Staring at the line of mountain ash around the rogues I had an idea. I had no clue if it would work. And I couldn't even check with Vince before. But I had to try, I had to save Aiden and my friends, I love him.
The words I love him reverberated around my skull, stunning my wolf and I both. We had never admitted that before, and looking at the situation we were in now, we may never get too I thought sadly. It only spurred me on though as I made my way back through the crowd towards the barrier again. I could hear people shouting at me, telling me to stop, I would only get hurt again. But I ignored them continuing on my mission.
Reaching the barrier I saw the rogues snarl at me, clearly displeased with how close I was to them, but knew they couldn't touch me. They lost interest quickly though knowing I couldn't get to them. Stretching my hand out I placed It against the barrier feeling it. I could feel the electric feel of it pulsating across my skin, it was painful but just barely manageable. Reaching my other hand up I placed it on the invisible barrier too. I didn't get shoved away like I did before, instead I managed to hold my position against the barrier this time.
Aiden was watching me from the other side, his eyes wide with amazement, he was all I could focus on as I pushed a little harder against the barrier. I could feel it moving against me, trying to resist me, so I pushed some more. It reared back at me, forcing more electric pain down my arms and body, I almost pulled away, but I knew I couldn't. If I did I would never be able to do this.
Vince was watching me now, his eyes wide, Darla hugged tightly into his chest. I could see her shallow breaths from here and the paleness of her skin showed she wasn't doing well. It only spurred me on as I pushed harder against the barrier, feeling it struggle against my power. I urged my wolf to join me in our attempt to get through the barrier. She agreed, I could feel us shift some more, our claws and teeth grew out as our eyes shifted. I could see the bright burning golden colour in the slight shimmer of the barrier now I was so close to it.
Mine and my wolfs combined strength made us stronger, we managed to take a step this time, I could feel the barrier getting thinner as we forced it inwards. Thoughts of my friends, of Aiden, of all those trapped inside flashed through my mind, remembering the little things like the way Bryan would tease me, or the way Hannah would giggle at her phone as Zach texted her, or the way that Vince and Darla snook glances at each other, I couldn't loose them. Not my pack I thought as I pushed against the barrier one last time, finally feeling it give way.
The force of the barrier exploding around me and the exhaustion that came over me was enough to make me collapse inwards, straight into a pair of arms. I didn't have much energy to do anything after that, I just laid there in Aiden's arms as the rogues began to panic around us. They realised how screwed they were now without the barrier. Through my heavy eyes I glanced one last time at the forest as I watched the rogues disappear through it. I could off sworn I saw a pair of bright gold eyes staring back and someone mouthing the words "Ill be back for you" at me, but when I blinked they were gone. Only the sound of rogues fleeing for their lives filtering in now.
I felt Aiden shaking me and asking me to look at him. I felt like I was underwater with how slow things moved and how diluted my hearing was, somehow I managed to look towards him, just in time to see him smile at me before I passed out, welcoming the darkness as the exhaustion took over.
