The hustle and bustle at the guild is just as intense as always this morning. The young teenagers rush to see what kind of F-ranked quests are available today, maybe they can find a job to paint someone's fence, or cut the grass. In that case, they'll rush forward to snatch the paper, and then they will run to the front desk to register the job as taken.
It is not only the lowest ranked quests that always get snatched up instantly however, the easier E and D-rank quests usually get taken within the first five minutes as well.
If the C-rank and above quests get taken or not, I never paid attention to, as you are only permitted to choose quests up to one rank above your own. But I imagine they don't. The higher ranking adventurers always seem to give off a way calmer aura.
Normally I tend to be very good at snatching the easy quests. I arrive about half an hour before opening hours, which is at five-thirty in the morning. I always make sure to stand on the left side of the door when it opens, and then walk in with long strides, and once at the quest board I read like a maniac to quickly choose.
Not this day however. Today I arrived just a few minutes past opening hour, and now I stand in front of the board, staring at the quest paper in my hand.
Class: RANK-D
Task: Hunt an arachnid hatchling.
Location: Darkwood Mound.
Reward: 8 silver.
Note: A proof of completion must be shown in order to claim the reward.
Quest completion time: 4 days.
This was the easiest quest left on the board. To hunt an arachnid hatchling.
An interesting point to take note of is that, while "Darkwood Mound" sounds like a big hill, it is actually a large forest. Why is it called that? I have absolutely no idea.
I have heard that arachnid monsters are known for their speed and agility, and some types also have poisonous fangs, but in this area I believe it should be simple enough. For some reason larger monsters have never been known to appear in this particular woods, fortunately enough for me.
I take notice that in the description it said "hatchling" rather than "baby arachnid" or "young arachnid" meaning that this one is the smallest of the small. Perfect.
Normally I would avoid monster hunting quests, as a rank-E, they are more trouble than they are worth, but I can't just do nothing at all. My family is in debt and I can not afford to take the day off.
At least I will earn 8 silvers rather than the normal 5 silvers I earn doing the normal simpler jobs. 3 extra silvers means 3 extra meals.
I take the paper to the lady standing at the desk.
"Kade! Good to see you again!"
Linda, everyone's favorite clerk, waves cheerfully across the room, knowing I was coming over.
My name is Kade Adler, and I am an adventurer.
At first glance one might think Linda is an elf, her face is fair like one, and she always wears a green dress. Although that dress does happen to be her work uniform. Underneath her long blonde hair however, her ears are unmistakably rounded off at the tips. Linda's dress is normally adorned by a golden broach, fashioned in the shape of a leaf, however at the moment she is spinning it around the fingers of her left hand.
Walking forward I place the quest paper on the counter.
She wrinkles her forehead while inspecting the quest I chose.
