Chapter 20

Somehow they were always one step ahead. 

While at one of her schedules, Hyebin received a phone call on the group phone, which was unusual since those closest to her knew she had a secret phone. Seeing the contact name, she answered in a hurry, worried about what might have happened.

"Mom?" Her voice came out weak as her mind came up with multiple possibilities of what could have caused her to call so suddenly and unexpectedly. "What's wrong?"

"I don't want to worry you but there was a break in..." her mother began to explain, feeling regretful for not taking better care. 

"Oh god, is everyone okay? Did they take anything?" Hyebin babbled on.

"Everyone's fine and they only took one thing-" Her mother paused as she contemplated on how to tell Hyebin. "They took a box you left behind before..."

A long silence took over as Hyebin felt her heart drop. All those memories had now become evidence to the scandalous affair between Hyebin and Changkyun. It was a ticking time bomb. But how would anyone have know? The box was nothing more than some cheap trash, nothing about it screamed money for a petty thieve to have taken it to sell. Surely they would have known about it's contents in order to have targeted it.

"We called the police-"

"Mom," Hyebin whined, not wanting it to go too far. "If it was just the box, they'll all find out..."

"Find out what?" She asked, hearing how nervous Hyebin seemed through the phone. "What was in the box?"

"There were photos," Hyebin mumbled, her eyes watering up. It had been a rough week and now it seemed as if the unfortunate events were going to continue into the next week. "They were of me and Changkyun. What am I going to do?"

"Don't worry," her mother attempted to calm her down. "If an article comes out, we'll make the police case public. You'll be able to gain sympathy since you were targetted-"

"I know you just want to help but I'm struggling," Hyebin admitted finally. "I'm really having a hard time right now. I can't take it. I'm on edge a lot these days, there's too much to think about. I feel like I'm stuck in quick sand and the harder I try to get out of it, the quicker I fall. Please, just give up this one time. I'll pay for any damages they made."

"Sweetheart-" Her mother was shocked to hear about this as it hadn't been that long since she'd last seen her and she seemed so happy, happy with love, her career and life. "Is everything okay? You know I'm here for you if you ever want to talk..."

"I can't-" Hyebin's breathing hitched as she tried to stop herself from breaking down. She was at work right now so she needed to hold it together. "Not right now. I just need time. I know it's scary that someone broke in but I- I don't know what else to do."

"I'll go down to the police station tomorrow and talk to them." Her mother agreed, not wanting to put her daughter in an awkward position. "You must be busy right now, I'll let you go but remember, I'm here whenever you need to talk. I'll always be here for you."

"Mm, thank you mom." Hyebin managed out with a sad smile. She couldn't tell her about her situation yet. She hadn't even been able to comprehend the situation she was in yet. "I love you."

"I love you too, sweetheart." Her mother replied, her warm voice managing to soothe Hyebin. it was at times like this that she really missed her family. They were by no means perfect but that was only natural. Just knowing she had a supportive family behind her was enough to fill Hyebin's heart. "I'll call you tomorrow and let you know how everything goes. Don't stress too much."

"Mhm, bye." Hyebin responded, not being able to muster up many words due to the overwhelming feeling of anxiety running through her along with the many invasive thoughts which were only heightening her anxiousness.

As her mother hung up, Hyebin stared at the screen one last time before beginning to walk back to Sooyeon, who kept a hold on the group phone. Hearing a ping, Hyebin glanced down briefly to see if it was for her... It was.
