CHAPTER 26 - MIND GAMES 🧠

FYI - Start from now on, I will not use any of MAXNAT photo for this Fanfic because it's hard to find a photo to suit the situation.

Nath: Why does your face look so red ? Are you feel shy after hearing what I just said ☺ ?

Max: You think I don't know what you're trying to do here 🙂 ?

Nath: What ?

Max: Mind games. You're trying to be nice and make me fall for your tricks 😌.

Nath: Mind games ? The way you think is beyond my expectations. Am I wrong for praising you ? “ Nath chuckles 🤭 ”

Max: When people like you compliment me, it usually means there's something they want 😌.

Nath: What do you mean by “ Something I want ? ”

Max: Why are you still pretending not to know ? You want the CCTV footage, don’t you 🙂 ? You know I won’t give it to you. You planned this from the very beginning.

Nath just sits on the beach mat, watching the waves crash while listening to every word Max says.

Max: When I accused you of following me to the flower shop… you had it all planned out. You knew I’d feel guilty, so you took advantage of the situation. The only reason you did all this was to get the CCTV footage. Am I right 🙂 ?

Nath sighed after hearing Max speak his mind.

Nath: I don’t want to argue with you about this. If that’s what you believe, then I’ll leave it at that. But you should know—if I truly wanted the footage, I would have asked for it from the start. That was never my intention. I’m not heartless enough to use your guilt against you.

Max: Not your intention ? Isn't it obvious ? Yet, you still try to deny it 😌.

Nath: Listen… The apology is already 40% done. I just wanted someone to come with me to the beach. That’s all.

Suddenly, Nath's phone rings. The panicked voice on the other end is loud and clear.

Leo: Mr. ! Where are you ? I’m in your bedroom, but you're not here ! Where are you right now ?!

Nath: Don’t worry about me. I’ll be back soon.

Leo: Mr. ! How can I not worry ? You're not in front of me ! What if something happens to you ?! You know your family will kill me if anything happens to you 😭 !

Nath: Leo, please calm down. I'm okay.

Leo: Where are you now ?! Do you want me to pick you up, or should I send a bodyguard ?!

Nath: Leo, I’m fine. I don’t need anyone. I’ll drive myself home.

Leo: Please, please be careful while driving.

Leo finds out his Mr. left without warning, causing chaos in his mind. He knows that if anything happens, the JACE family will blame him. His fear is real.

Max: Let’s go home.

Nath: I want to enjoy the scenery for a little longer.

Max: Haven’t you had enough ? I don’t want to be responsible if anything happens to you 😌.

Nath: You're right. It’s still not enough. Do you know how hard it is for me to escape the world I live in ? How long I have to wait for a moment of freedom ? Since childhood, this is only the second time I’ve been able to spend time at the beach.

Max falls silent after hearing Nath’s words. He had never thought about Nath’s life beyond what he assumed. The second time ? Really ? Is it possible for someone to live like this ?

Max: Let’s go back. You can always come again next time.

Nath: There is no “ NEXT TIME ” 🙂 Didn’t you hear how frantic my assistant was ? I can only go places with someone my family has hired.

Nath: Coming here without them was the happiest moment I’ve ever had. Wouldn’t it be funny if I told you that I always think about ways to escape my own home ? But I always fail.

Escape ? Why would someone like Nath, who has everything, want to run away from his own home ? Max stares at him, realizing that Nath might be hiding something deeper.

Max starts to wonder… Maybe Nath didn’t take advantage of the 40% apology. Maybe he really just wanted someone to accompany him. There were many others, but why did he choose Max ?

NATH—the youngest son of the JACE family. To the world, he has everything. No one sees a single flaw in his life. But Max does. He sees loneliness written all over Nath’s face.

Nath: It’s so peaceful listening to the waves when it's just the two of us. Isn’t it silly of me to wish I could take this beach home with me ?

Max: I bet you have enough money to buy your own island.

Nath: If I had as much money as you think I do… you're right. But if that were the case, I wouldn’t have brought you here. We’d be on my own private beach. But I’m not rich enough—not yet. Everything belongs to my family, not me 🙂.

Why ? Why does every word Nath says sound so heartbreaking ? Max doesn’t want to accept this side of Nath. It’s not his place to listen to this story—not when he’s supposed to hate him.

Nath’s phone rings again, and he answers it.

Nath: Yes, Leo 😑 ?

Leo: Mr. , are you already on your way ?

Nath: I am 😑.

Leo: Well, if anything happens, just call me.

Nath ends the call and sighs. He stares at the vast, empty sea. His eyes are void of emotion.

Nath: Let’s go home. You can wait in the car.

Nath stands up and starts packing everything. Max leaves him alone and waits in the car, watching from a distance.

The face of the little devil he once hated… now looks unfamiliar. A face he can’t quite describe. Could it be… that the devil isn’t as bad as he thought? Could the devil still have an angelic side ?

Why does Nath’s face look like someone who is drowning—someone sinking too deep for anyone to save?

Max notices that Nath's eyes no longer sparkle when he talks about his life. This worries Max deeply—he fears he may never see that light in Nath's eyes again.
