"Hawk is on his way," KT said from her bed. She was still combing through Yasmine's hair and piecing it out for styling, but reading her phone as it laid on her thigh. As she went back to braiding, she smiled to herself. "He says he'll be here in about ten minutes."
"Ten minutes?" Yasmine asked, voice raising a pitch. "That's not enough time."
"Sure it is," Moon giggled as she walked into the room from KT's closet. She brought one of KT's crop tops with her, smiling at the sunflowers embroidered across the front. "You already picked out your outfit, unlike someone I know."
Laughing, she threw the top at KT, who couldn't catch or block it. After it hit her in the face and fell in her lap, she threw a dirty look at Moon.
"Hey! I'm doing some very important hair styling here!"
They both laughed, but stopped when they realized Yasmine hadn't joined them.
Moon came over and sat beside her on the floor. "What's up, Yas-bear?"
"Nothing," Yasmine answered quickly. She started picking at her perfectly painted fingernails, cleaning nonexistent dirt from under them. "I just want to look good tonight. Victory party and all, you know."
KT and Moon shared a look, one they didn't wipe away fast enough.
"What?" Yas asked, turning her head just as KT was tying off her hair. "Why are you making faces at each other?"
"Oh, no reason," Moon giggled, getting up to find her shoes. "You're just being a little... what's the word I'm looking for?"
"Critical? Stressed? Anything that might describe her constant worrying over her appearance for tonight?" KT suggested, smirking.
Moon gave her an almost smug look back, her nose crinkling cutely. "Something like that."
"I am not worrying about how I'm going to look tonight," Yasmine said, standing and stretching her legs.
She was wearing an off the shoulder, periwinkle blue top with white shorts, accessorized with a long necklace and an assortment of bracelets. She'd asked KT to french braid her hair, which she pulled over and let rest on her shoulder. As she sat in front of the vanity, she started checking her makeup and glossed her lips again.
"Why would I be worried about something like that anyway? I look hot all of the time."
KT pulled off her cami and grabbed the crop top Moon had picked out for her. "I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with a tall Greek guy I know."
"With dark hair and soft hazel eyes," Moon joined in on the teasing.
"Demetri?" Yasmine asked, her voice raising another pitch. She shook her head and capped off her lip gloss, then tossed it into her purse. "As if."
"Sure," KT and Moon said simultaneously.
"I'm serious," Yasmine said. In the meantime, KT walked into her closet. "I mean, think about it. I'm mega hot and popular, and Demetri is really nerdy and rambly and... smart and kind."
"I don't think any of those things are bad," Moon said. She hugged Yasmine from behind, resting her head on her friend's shoulder. She sang happily, "You like him!"
"I do not!"
"Then why are you being so defensive about it?" KT shouted from her closet.
Yasmine scoffed. "I am not being defensive. I'm only trying to explain to you why him and I simply wouldn't work."
"You haven't explained shit!"
Moon hummed in agreement. "She has a point. You've just listed off traits about him that are cute and admirable."
