"They say I did something bad!" KT smiled, singing along to Taylor Swift over the car speakers. Beside her, Yasmine was in sync with her, smiling just as wide as she drove. The volume was turned up high, probably higher than it needed to be, and the girls were having the time of their lives singing at the top of their lungs. "Then why's it feel so good?"
Afternoon had quickly turned to evening and they'd decided to get dinner before heading home. They could still taste creamy pasta sauce and spinach ravioli on their lips, bellies full of warmth and cozy feelings that they would carry all the way to their beds, though they were not yet exhausted from the day of fun they'd had. If anything, they were full of elation and cheer, giddy with memories made and giggles shared.
KT felt like she was on top of the world, like she could spread her wings and fly. She wanted to soar and feel the wind push her hair back. The carefree day had let her stretch her legs, giving her a taste of something different than her usual routine. It was lovely and freeing, but she was just as happy to return home, where everything she loved awaited her.
The music suddenly stopped as Yasmine's phone began ringing throughout the car. She quickly turned down the volume, as the blaring ringtone was not something either of them wanted to hear at full blast, while KT grabbed the phone.
"Who is it?"
"Demetri," KT told her, then swiped to answer it. She put on a super sweet voice to speak into the receiver. "You've reached Yasmine's phone. Apologies, but she can't answer your call right now because the last time she was on her phone while driving, she hit a parked car."
"KT, give me my phone!" Yas said, blushing. She held out her phone and made a give it here motion with her fingers, sparing a quick glance to glare at her sister. "And don't talk about that."
KT giggled with mischief and shooed Yasmine's hand away. "How about I hold the phone and you talk?"
"Fine, whatever. Just shut up," she said, scoffing. She tried to sound offended, but it was hard for her to cover up her feelings around KT of all people. They were just too close for any of her tactics to work. She was ultimately a little flustered by the teasing. "Hi, Demetri."
"Hey," his voice came through the speakers, though he didn't sound as enthusiastic as he usually did when talking to Yas. It was fairly odd and a little jarring. The girls could practically hear his frown.
"What's wrong?" Yasmine asked, beginning to frown herself. Her eyebrows furrowed and she nervously bit her lip.
Demetri sighed. "I don't know. I guess I needed to talk to someone that wasn't Sam or Robby, but now I'm second guessing myself."
Upon hearing this, the girls shared a look. Demetri had recently become acquainted with Sam and Robby Keene when he started taking free karate lessons at the Miyagi-Do dojo after another botched attempt with Cobra Kai. They weren't very close, which made sense, but what did it mean that he didn't want to talk to him about whatever was going on.
"You don't have to second guess anything," Yasmine assured him, keeping her eyes on the road. Her tone began firm and confident again, her nerves seeming to melt away. "You can tell me anything."
"Well..." Demetri still hesitated, taking a pause. He sighed heavily once more, then let out his thoughts. "Eli kinda beat me up at the mall today."
"He what?" the girls asked simultaneously, shocked and baffled.
"I didn't realize KT could still hear me," he said awkwardly.
KT pulled the phone closer to her, her heart beginning to race. That can't be right. It can't be true. Eli would never do something like that... but then again, why would Demetri lie about something like this?
