When Hawk got to KT's house, he was still smiling. He walked up to her door with a cheerful disposition. He knew she was going to ask about training, she always did, and he didn't know what he was going to tell her but he'd worry about that hurdle when he got to it. For the time being, he just wanted to spend time with and hold his girlfriend.
He waved goodbye to his mom as he made his way up to the front door. She smiled and waved back, then drove away. He imagined she would go home and occupy herself with the idea of date night, something she didn't get to have often due to his father's busy schedule. It would be good for her, especially now that she wouldn't have to worry about Hawk or school bullies. She could enjoy herself, which in turn meant Hawk could enjoy himself.
As he approached the door, he rang the bell and slid his hands into his pockets. The door opened soon after, revealing a shocked Yasmine.
"Oh my god, I forgot to text you," she said.
It wasn't the greeting he was expecting. In fact, Yasmine wasn't exactly the sister he was hoping would answer the door. However, those thoughts quickly left his mind as she looked at him with strange eyes and a look he had never seen of her face.
"Uh, about what?" he asked, a little caught off guard.
She peered behind him, then moved away from the doorway to let him in. "Something came up. I was supposed to text you for KT, but I must have thought I did it in the middle of everything happening."
"What happened? Is KT okay?"
Panic and worry gripped Hawk's heart upon hearing this, but he didn't let it show on his face. Anything could have gone wrong in the time he had gone into the dojo and gotten to her house. It was only a matter of how severe the situation or incident was.
"Yeah, she's fine, but-"
"Where is she?"
He was doing a terrible job of hiding his worry.
"In the family room, but Hawk-"
He didn't hear anything after room, moving past Yasmine to venture through the house. He moved fast, vaguely aware that she was following behind him and trying to get his attention, but he didn't care about what she had to say. He had to see KT for himself and ensure that she was alright. That was the only way his anxiously beating heart was going to calm down.
The hall opened up into the home's family room, which was large and spacious with a fancy fireplace against the far wall. It also led to the huge backyard through a sliding glass door and held one of the biggest couches Hawk had ever seen.
The cushy couch was where he expected to find KT, possibly laid out or distraught in some way. A million scenarios ran through his head before he walked into the room. As he crossed that threshold, he stopped in his tracks as he saw her. She was indeed on the couch, but she wasn't alone.
Sitting on her lap was a chubby little baby. She had her arms secured around the baby's midsection, too distracted to even notice Hawk's presence.
He turned to Yasmine, frowning. "You made it sound like something bad had happened."
"You didn't let me finish," she countered, matching his annoyed tone. She threw her arm out and gestured to KT and the mystery baby. "Our neighbor all but begged us to watch him for the evening because had to go to her office for some kind of work emergency and-"
"You were gonna tell me not to come," he finished.
"It was more like a heads up," she corrected. "Or at least it was supposed to be."
A timer started ringing and she immediately pushed away all thought about what she hadn't done. She said something about strawberry bread and started walking away, leaving him without much more information on the current situation.
