I stepped away as quickly as I could, almost tripping on a stray piece of gravel on the ground but able to put at least a few feet of distance between us. He tilted his head-the grin that pulled at the corner of his lips made me shiver with fear.
"What? Not excited to see me?" he sighed. "And here I thought we had a connection."
The memory of the first time I ever saw him surfaced, and I gulped. I was practically brand new to the office, and I had no idea what to do when he charged into the building. The venomous tone he used as he shouted for Namjoon, and the weird way the guys surrounded me, as if protecting me from him.
The lack of protection at this very moment was glaringly obvious, and I felt too exposed and alone.
"Speaking of the guys," he pointed at me with curious eyes. "Where are your bodyguards tonight?" My gaze tracked every one of his movements as he stepped forward and made a show of looking around. His expression bordered on mocking when he glanced back at me.
"It's odd they'd let you out all by yourself... Especially with everything going on." He turned toward Chanyeol, who, when he wasn't weirdly staring at my finger, was watching silently. Like he was waiting for a cue or sign to do something.
I took another step back.
I was on the edge of the curb, but honestly, I didn't mind getting hit by an oncoming car if it meant getting away from the two of them. More importantly, the man inside the club.
"Don't you think that's odd?" Xiumin asked Chanyeol again. He nodded silently, and I blamed my damned curiosity for the words that came out of my mouth next.
"What do you mean... With everything going on?" They both looked way too pleased with my interaction, and I immediately regretted saying anything.
Xiumin straightened and put his hands in his pockets. He rocked back and forth on the heels of his feet while he hummed, as if debating on telling me. I narrowed my eyes and finally, he spoke.
"Only the small matter of your boss declaring war on our boss." His tongue darted out, wetting his lips. "And you know what they say... All is fair in love and war."
"Including the pretty little birdie that started it all," Chanyeol added. His dark, assessing gaze roamed over me from head to toe slowly. Too slowly.
I shook my head adamantly. "I-I didn't... Start a war. I have nothing to do with whatever is going on between Namjoon and Sehun." Xiumin tsked and sighed, disappointed. I clenched my jaw. Man, I really hated this guy.
"See, that's where you're wrong. You have everything to do with it. Respect is very important in our line of work, and unfortunately, you stepped out of line. Things could've been different, but you had to say something in front of all those people, and Sehun really doesn't like when his ego is stepped on."
