"There's a trial?" I asked Adam. Adam glanced away, nervous. "Yes, there is. He wants to make sure you're safe." I looked at him, unbelieving. "Do you think I'm dangerous?" I asked him.
Adam turned his head so sharply at me, I thought he would get whiplash. "Never," He said, narrowing his eyes. I breathed an internal sigh of relief. He didn't think I was dangerous.
Funnily enough, I wondered what he would think later on in the trial if I used my invisibility powers. I could imagine his green eyes growing wider and wider until he gets an attack of the heart.
"Thank you," I said meekly. Adam looked at me, smiling. "You say 'thank you' a lot, is that normal?" He teased. I grinned at him. "Yes it is." I said.
He looked down at his crossed fingers and back at me. "You need to be there at eight. We can walk there since it isn't that far. But..." He paused.
"But?" I repeated nervously. There was always a 'but' in the dramatic stories and movies I used to read.
"But...Richard had gotten off of Security this afternoon when his co-worker Donovan had passed him a note, a note he passed onto me while you were sleeping..."
"And?"
"It says, 'We need to talk to her.' " He said quietly.
Not a second sooner, I knew who wanted to talk to me. There was no mistake that it was one of my family members, or at the most, the ones that actually care about me.
"Did it say where?" I asked.
"Yes, on the inside but I didn't think..." Adam answered, looking at me with his green eyes.
Think what? That I'd want to? Maybe, maybe not. But they were my family. I couldn't refuse the ones that wanted to see me, could I?
"Can I see it?" I asked, reaching out for the scrap of note book paper, the large red font on it.
"Sure," He said, giving it to me.
I looked at the writing, hoping that it was maybe Holly's or Vance, but no. It was a unfamiliar writing. Not even my parents'. Maybe Damien's.
"It's pretty close to the community." I said, looking at the address of the place where I had to go to meet the family member who still cared for me. It was diner not far from the community. 30 minute walk from here.
"Mmm," Adam said, seemingly not interested. He got up from the couch we were sitting on in the living room and made his way into the kitchen.
"Want your breakfast before you go?" He asked a moment later.
"No, I can go now before..." I said, looking at the clock. It was 6:50 p.m. "...Eight." I finished.
"Okay, I'll keep it here for you after the trial, then." Adam said from the kitchen. A distinct clatter of dishes in the background.
"Uh, sure." I said, putting the note in my pocket and getting up from the couch and making my way to the front door.
"You're going now?" He asked.
"Yeah, might as well. Do it quick." I answered.
"Well..." He said.
What? What did you want to say?
"Bye..." He finished.
"Bye," I said, opening the door and stepping out.
"Bye." He said again.
I could swear I heard a tone of regret in his voice. But maybe it was just me over thinking what he was saying.
I closed the front door behind me and started walking to the front gates. The guy guarding the gate moved from his spot. "You going?" He asked me. "Yeah," I said. "I'll be back though."
"Best be, there will be a trial tonight at eight, in the auditorium, for some girl or something." He mentioned. I stifled the urge to giggle and tell him I was the girl. "Okie-Dokie," I said.
