My wolf purred when she spoke our name earlier today. Her voice however angry was smooth and heavenly "Alpha Sorren!" It was a formal title one I did not wish for her to feel obligated to call me. Perhaps in a certain circumstance maybe in the bedroom when our relationship moved to that point I wouldn't mind. That was far down the line though I was sure.
She surprised me on the porch with her act of defiance. It brought forward many emotions something my Beta seemed to notice as he linked to me and so eloquently said he'd leave the two of us alone. And the blush that painted her face before she'd said my name, she looked adorable. We unpacked her clothes which I unfolded and examined as I hung them on onto hangars in the closet. They were small, not that I expected anything different as Calla was small, but the clothes really put that fact into perspective.
Holding a pair of her shoes in my hands actually made me chuckled to myself, they fit perfectly in the palm of my hand, the length of the shoe running fingertip to palm a size 7 I'd seen written on the sole. It didn't help that she was human and wolves were bigger in nature and I was bigger than average wolves because I was born an Alpha. I'd then offered to help her unpack the rest of her things but she declined.
She'd claimed she was just tired but I could see through her lie. Calla was a horrible lier I'd come to realize. Not only could I detect lies because well my hearing allowed me to tune into her heart beat but she also displayed her emotions openly however subtle I could tell. She was in the shower now and I'd just put dinner in the oven. It was breaded chicken with vegetables. I was thankful I'd decided to learn how to cook a few things in my life so Calla and I could've alone without my meddling house keeper Francesca. She would return soon enough to begin cooking again although she normally was gone by the time I arrived home and dinner was ready, she would no doubt befriend Calla. Francesca like the rest of my pack minus Jaden and most likely Jaden's mate knew nothing of Calla and I intended to keep it that way for at least the next week.
Sighing I focused on the sound of the shower. I could hear the movement of shampoo and body wash bottles being set down and smell the scent of lavender and honeysuckle as they were used. Mixed with her scent it was truly wonderful. I shook myself out of that trance and made my way up to the bedroom quietly.
There were four boxes piled in the corner and I opened the one labeled Calla's pictures. I wanted to look through the rest of the boxes to ensure no unwanted items like phones, money, or tickets were hidden within. The letter Calla's Dad had written her had made me upset the phrase "I know we will meet again someday" seeming to be an ode to something hidden although I could just be paranoid. Without a doubt Calla would run if given the chance and if she did I was sure my wolf would be so dangerously close to the surface that she would fear me indefinitely. That was something that I did not want to happen.
I took out the various picture frames carefully my eyes soaking up the images of Calla's childhood. A picture of her no older than three or four in a little yellow rain jacket with red boots standing in a muddle puddle with a smile large enough to light up the room. She had dimples either side her cheeks something I'd yet to see displayed from her.
The next framed picture I looked at was her and her parents dressed up I their best she was older in this picture perhaps six or seven. The blue frilly dress she wore brought out her hazel eyes as she clung to her parents hands. Next there were pictures of her perhaps as a preteen with braided hair and braces again a large smile as she held up a fish she'd caught from the lake in the background.
I'd pulled out the various loose pictures opening the envelopes and shuffling through them quickly my glance glowing over various faces. Friends of hers that she climbed mountains with, kayaked with, rock climbed with. She was quiet the active girl. I'd made my way through that box and moved onto the box marked desk supplies finding pens markers and various journals with doodles and diary entries. I'd decided to be nosy and perhaps read the entries later and moved on to a box marked callas blankets finding a green box stitched quilt with a knitted blanket. Lastly I opened the box marked decorations and found miscellaneous items. A small jewelers box with rings and bracelets. A Polaroid camera with film. A snow globe with a palm tree inside. A few small animal figurines that looked fine hand sculpted. Some post cards from various mountains and some sheet music. I'd never read music and so the black scribbled all over the white page looked foreign to me but in the top right corner it said piano. Perhaps she could play?
The shower turned off and that was my cue to put the boxes back as they were and head back downstairs to check on dinner. I'd found nothing in her belongings to be of concern and instead now found myself even more infatuated with her. I could tell a lot about her from the contents of those boxes and yet nothing at all. I'd seen a window into her world of the happiness she possessed before I'd brought her here. My wolf whimpered at that thought, we'd made her so unhappy.
Calla made her way downstairs just as the timer went off signaling that the chicken was ready. I grabbed the pan out of the oven and set it onto the stove top to cool. I turned to greet Calla as I poured us some water. She was no longer wearing my clothes and instead was clad in a sweatshirt with sweatpants and fuzzy socks. Her wet hair was braided out of her face and glasses sat upon her nose. "I didn't know you wore glasses." In all of the pictures I'd seen of her they were not present once. "I normally wear contacts. I don't like wearing my glasses."
"I think they compliment you." I said giving her a serving of chicken. I dialed it back from breakfast and dinner last night her words from earlier echoing over me she was human she didn't need to eat as much as me. "If you'd like more please help yourself but I figured perhaps I'd take your earlier advice and not give you a pile of food." She nodded at the plate in approval "I appreciate not being given enough food to feed two people." She nodded picking up her fork and knife and digging in.
As we are in silence I noticed how she sat slouched over her feet crossed tightly and her arms tucked in. She looked very uncomfortable and I was confused as to why. What could I possibly be doing now. "Do you feel okay?" I settled on asking. "I'm cold." She said "Your house is freezing." I hadn't thought of that, as a wolf I was always warm no matter the circumstance and if for some reason I did become cold it was a problem for everyone around me because that meant it was quiet literally sub zero. "I can turn the furnace on." I got up making my way to the thermostat. The temperature read 58 "um what temperature do you normally set a thermostat? I heard her sick padded feet hit the floor as she made her way over. She looked at the thermostat in shock "Normally 68 or 70." She said reaching up and cranking the dial up.
The furnace hummed to life and began to slowly warm up the space. We went back to eating and she finished her food to the entirety something that made my wolf feel proud, we made something she liked. "Where did you learn how to cook?" She suddenly asked me. I was stunned this was the first conversation she'd stirred with me. "I taught myself a few years ago. My house keeper Francesca needed more days off and so I had to fend for myself." She nodded.
"I was surprised when you cooked breakfast. It was strange, I'd never pictured an Alpha doing something so...normal?" She questioned. I shrugged "Well I do still need to eat." I exclaimed "I do have a relaxed side that I slip into when I am at home away from my pack. I don't need to be so serious." I explained. She seemed to contemplate what I said and then spoke "I just never thought about it like that. The Alpha of my pack." I swallowed the growl as she said that and tried to reign in my possessive nature she was part of my pack now "I guess I'd only seen him at public events but he'd always seemed so above the whole domesticated living." I laughed "Did you expect a castle?"
She shrugged "Perhaps I did." I rose a brow she was toying with me. "We'll if a castle is what you desire I will build you one, or are Alphas not made for that work?" I teased back. I watched as the corner of her lips twitched "No that includes lifting heavy things and setting them down you could do that. You'd just need the brains of the operation." My mouth opened in shock, she'd just called me stupid.
"I built this place and it has been here the last few decades no problem." Her eyes widened "Really?" She asked surprised her eyes scanning the place "No." I said and she bowed her head exhaling in what could almost be described as a chuckle as she smirked. "That's good because you said decades." Her gaze now met mine again "How old are you?" She asked.
I assume she was aware of the king lifespan of wolves but decided to test that theory "I am twenty five." I said. Her eyes roamed my face her eyebrows knitted together in thought "How long have you been twenty five?" She asked and it was then I knew the extent of her knowledge on the subject. "About one hundred years." She inhaled deeply "Right so you're a hundred and thirty and I'm twenty." She nodded to herself in a panicked. "Hey, it's okay that just means I've been around for a bit longer is all."
She shifted "It's just strange that's three generations of my family." She said putting the time scale into perspective for me. As a wolf that time span was short, fleeting almost but for humans? I had never taken their shirt lives into perspective until this very moment. A normal lifespan was perhaps seventy or eighty years? Ninety or a hundred years at the very latest. My wolf stared at the thought push me to change her into a half blood this very moment. "I hadn't realized how time moves so differently to you, to humans." I said. She shrugged "I think it makes the little things more special, it gives them meaning." she stated.
"Do you feel any warmer?" I asked her. "No I think it will take a while to warm up." She said. Calla's hair was wet so I assumed that intensified the cold effect. "I have some blankets I can get you and I'll light the fireplace. Would you be inclined to watch movies today?" I asked her. She looked at me as if discerning my intentions. "You want to watch movies?" She asked.
"Well humans like to do that right? My TV is still brand new I've barely used it so you can break it in." She got up from her seat and put her dish in the sink "Don't bother I can get it." She then turned to me "Do you've never watched a movie?" She asked. "Very few. I'm often very busy." I answered. "But not today?" She asked me and I smiled "Never for you."
