worm

i'd love you
if you were a sunset,
tainting everything orange
on a lovely beach.

i'd love you
if you were a pit of sulfur,
waiting to burst into
golden flames.

regardless,
i'd love you.

i'd love you
if you were a silvery river,
snaking here and there
under a moonlit sky.

i'd love you
if you were a tiny worm,
crawling about
in the mud.

regardless,
i'd love you.

i'd love you
if you were the biggest of
the greek statues,
my Athena Parthenos,
glimmering with divinity.

i'd love you
if you were the nastiest of
the New York sewers,
my Hudson River,
slouching with contempt.

regardless,
i'd love you.
