if a wolf loses its grin,
is it a wolf, still?
if a serpent loses its fangs,
is it a snake, still?

at which point do we lose
too much of ourselves,
and become unable
to know what we were
supposed to be?

surely, the wolf is still a wolf.
it acts, thinks, and lives as one.

surely, the snake is still a snake.
it acts, thinks, and lives as one.

do i act, think and live as myself?
or have i become less and less
of my own reflection, and
more and more of some
other beast?
