You hurried to the café, praying Amanda would be there so you could get this over with.
"Hey, Law?" you asked, catching his attention as the three of you were weaving through the streets. "What did that lady inject in your shoulder yesterday?"
"Hm? Oh. It was Wolfsbane."
You heard Kid make a noise of disgust.
"Wolfsbane?" you asked.
"Aye. It's an herb grown in secluded parts of the world with a variety of health benefits for humans. But not so much for wolves. When ingested, it suppresses our ability to shift, which I suppose has come in handy now, given the full moon is tomorrow, but at the expense of our immune system."
"What do you mean?"
"By suppressing our ability to shift into our wolf forms, it also thieves us of our healing, our sense of smell and direction, and our lung capacity, among other things. Might not sound so bad, but with Wolfsbane, that shit happens all at once. It's suffocating. Feels like your entire body is being constricted by the world's largest anaconda."
"Just talking about it makes me sick to my stomach," Kid groaned.
You felt your insides twist at the thought, never knowing that this even existed.
Law continued, "Since I was already in my wolf form, it was trying to take me out of it, like someone's playing tug-of-war in your own body."
"It sounds like you should be bed-ridden by now..." you thought out loud, grateful that he wasn't.
"Ah, well, the Wolfsbane they injected me with was also mixed with anesthesia, so it wasn't that strong of a dose. Still felt like fucking hell, though."
Kid jumped in on the conversation. "Point is, we gotta get rid of these guys before they find any more of us. Whatever their plan is, it ain't beneficial for anybody."
You nodded, thankful that Law wasn't experiencing the excruciating pain he mentioned. "What about you, Kid?"
"What about me?"
"Tomorrow is the full moon, but I haven't seen you shift into your wolf form once. Law was having trouble yesterday."
Law glared at you for calling him out, but you needed as many answers as you could get right now.
"Oh, trust me, it's been rough. It comes in waves, wanting to shift, and it's like a call you can't ignore. So far I've been managing, though. With everything going on right now, guess my mind's been distracted enough."
"I see," you replied, still piecing together the events as best you could, and wondering how and why those guys decided to show up now.
Perhaps the full moon tomorrow night was a catalyst for a wolf's demise.
The three of you slowed down as you made it to the café.
"So, can you still shift back to your wolf?" you asked Law, "How long until it wears off?"
"I still technically could, it'd just take extra effort," he replied after some hesitation, "Should only last a day or two. But I've seen it last for weeks."
"Weeks?!" you gawked.
Kid nodded. "Yeah, depending on the amplifier- OW!"
Law cut him off with an elbow to the ribs.
"Okay, now you lost me," you groaned, your head heavy with information.
Kid continued, much to Law's disdain, "Basically, if the herb falls into the wrong hands, they'll crush it up and mix it with...something else...to amplify the effects."
