It had seemed so exciting to get up here, but I was just getting more and more tense. Jub had gotten better after a much needed rest, he was much more relaxed than before.
I was glad about this, but other than that, my concern for Notchy just got much worse, now that Jub was okay again.
Hero only needed a short amount of time to get back onto his feet, but his demeanor changed once he woke back up from his rest. He fell silent, wordlessly awaiting orders. I had the feeling that something happened again, but didn't want to bother by asking him.
I sighed a bit and rubbed over my head. Nighty suddenly nudged me with his elbow, making me flinch in surprise. "You good mate? You're so so silent.", he asked. I hesitantly nodded. "Yeah... I'm fine..."
"Liar."
I let out a small, quiet laughter, burying my face in my hands. "How could I be alright when it feels like I'm extremely helpless...", I whispered weakly. Nighty stayed quiet before patting my shoulder and getting up. I watched him head to the edge of our camp, not sure if he'd just leave or not without even saying anything.
"Come with me. There's something I want to show you.", he said to me. I frowned softly, not exactly in the mood of walking around. But I slowly got up and decided to follow him.
He took my hand and lead me over the Farlands and into a cave, from which we reached other ravines. He had to help me navigate them a few times, tho I was thankful for that.
Nighty didn't really say much, but stayed quiet and didn't give me a long talk. In a way it was really calming, it allowed me to relax a lot more than I expected.
I glanced at him. "Why did you want to walk with me?", I asked him. Nighty looked at me before looking away again. "I... figured that you may need it, Jay. I don't want to give you the talk you heard so many times already. So I wanted to try something new with you.", he admitted. I blinked a bit, very surprised about that, but eventually smiled. "Thank you... That helped me a lot...", I replied.
He seemed really happy with that reassurance, even tho something kept his happiness down. I frowned softly and tilted my head. "What's wrong?"
Nighty sighed. "It's nothing important, just the usual worries."
"Which worries?"
"About... Notch, the kids, everyone else... If I can protect you guys after the entire suit shit we went through since my body still doesn't really listen to me...", he finally admitted. I softly patted his back. "You may not be able to protect us, but now it's our turn to do so anyway. Now we're the ones protecting you after what has happened and what you have done for us! And the kids are alright, Shadow and Jerry are taking care of them. There's nothing you need to worry about regarding that.", I told him. He chuckled weakly. "I guess so... maybe I'm just paranoid again, I didn't take my meds since a while."
"Meds?"
"I take medicine against paranoia since the entire "Hero going insane and making dolls out of us"-dilemma."
"That hit you that badly?", I asked surprised. He nodded, a bit embarrassed about that fact. "Yeah, it did. But I suppose it started right after I got locked into that metal suit, maybe that was the trigger." I shrugged, thinking.
I'm surprised it took such a hit on him. He never really shows it, even if things don't work the way they should. Nighty's limbs sometimes lock for some odd reason, maybe because they got more or less severed.
With a soft, reassuring pat on his shoulder I attempted to show my condolences to his pain. Nighty let out a small hum, acknowledging my intentions. "Wanna go back?", he asked, stretching his arms into the sky until his spine popped. I started thinking and eventually nodded. "Is it the same way back?"
Nightmare seemed to hesitate a bit. "Well...", he started, almost uncertain. "I suppose we could go there, but there's a rule up here."
A bit confused I tilted my head. A rule? In the Farlands, an area where barely anyone lives?
"Which rule?", I poked around. Nighty seemed to have heard my thoughts, he was aware why I asked that. "Oh, you would be surprised about what kind of beings live here. And the sheer amount is nuts. But, when being here, you should never go the same way back as you come."
My confusion only grew and I tilted my head with a puzzled frown.
"There are legends about a ghost roaming around the Farland caves. A violent ghost, ripping everything to shreds that turns back. No one knows how it got here, or if it even exists, but there are too many people that never returned after attempting to find said ghost.", Nighty told me in an almost whispered tone, grinning.
"You're kidding?", I tried, getting a bit nervous. Nighty grinned more and shook his head. "Nope~", he cooed. "Those legends are true~"
"But you just said no one knows if that ghost even exists!"
"Anyone that never lived up here.", Nighty corrected me, amused. "The outside world clings to the thought that the paranormal doesn't exist and that ghosts are figments of our imagination. This isn't the case tho, because I experienced both. And latter we're currently experiencing together, that being your husband. I think I wasn't wrong, now that Hero mentioned seeing Henory and Notch for the second time."
I frowned, following him as he continued into the cave. "What do you mean, you weren't wrong?", I asked, almost feeling like Red back when he was all innocent and not troubled by prophecies, death and psychopathy.
Nightmare put his back against a wall and folded his hands so he can lift me up onto a ledge. I stepped onto his hand and he pushed me up so I could climb on before taking my hand so I could help him up. The air was getting fresher again.
"What I'm saying is that I heard voices, Jay. Familiar voices. It was definitely Notch, now that we got that confirmation. I don't know what he was saying, the voice was so distorted and barely existed, but it was there. I think... I think we have a much bigger chance than we think, Jay. And I'm not only saying that to calm you down. If he manages to build even just that sliver of connection between the living world and the In Between, I think we can actually pull him out."
I stopped and stared at him in shock. With this information he had just given me the hope I had so desperately hoped for.
Wait for me, Notchy. I will come for you and save you.
Somehow that thought made me smile and I quickly followed Nighty back to the surface.
