"it's hard to admit that you aren't as strong as everyone thinks you are."
-"you didn't eat last night?" Val asks me, picking up what she left out of the microwave.
"wasn't hungry." I answer blatantly, wiping my tired eyes. "remind me why we have to wake up this early again?"
"Ames, it's almost 9." she scoffs, throwing away her trash. "and the salon opens up at ten."
"do I have to go?"
"you want this job don't you? you know this doesn't just get handed out to you." she answers.
"okay mother." I groan, rolling my eyes.
"you better not compare me to your mother." she says strictly.
"I'm kidding." I answer, walking back to my room. my makeup bag sits on the vanity she has and I apply minimal makeup since I don't wear that much.
"hey," Val says, knocking on my door while opening it. "we're supposed to wear all black so."
"that will not be a problem." I say. finally I can wear black without being criticized.
I decide on wearing my dark wash denim high waisted shorts with a sheer black button up with my knee socks and doc martens.
"this acceptable?" I ask Val as she scabs my outfit.
"all gucci." she replies emotionless with a thumbs up. "let's go."
suddenly I remember to get my purse before we leave the apartment and go downstairs to the salon. Val unlocks the front door with many people walking in within minutes, gathering everyone together in the break room.
"okay everyone!" she calls trying to get everyone's attention, which works. "this is my niece Amethyst, she'll be staying with us for a while and she is a rookie so will anyone be able to help her way around here?"
"I will." a male voice sounds from the back of the room. I try to catch a glimpse of him, and when I do , I can't take my eyes off. his body is full of muscle. biceps, triceps, every muscle seen on his body. he has a small sleeve of tattoos running up his left arm, his hair is a lighter brown with a little tip of blonde on the tops of it. he is wow. his eyes meet mine and a smirk appears across his face when they do.
"thank you Drew! finally a volunteer for once." Val says enthusiastically. "okay everyone lets get to work."
I feel her arm tug me back slightly once everyone leaves the smaller size room.
"don't worry about him, he's a charmer." she whispers in my ear, giving me some type of approval. all I do is nod in response before I make my way over to him and the smirk still seems to be on his face.
"hi." I say awkwardly.
"hey, I'm drew nice to meet you." he says in a chill tone, holding out his muscly hand ( if that's even possible ) for me to shake. I accept it and give him a toothless smile.
"okay, I guess I'm going to teach you the basics." he says, placing his hands on his hips.
"okay, well teach me the basics then." I answer, a sudden burst of confidence rushing through me. I usually don't have much confidence when it comes to hot guys. but with michael, it was completely different. he noticed how I was around him, and he told me I didn't have to have a wall between us. and that, right then, is when it fell down. fuck, I've got to stop thinking about him when he for sure isn't thinking about me.
"are you listening?" Drew breaks me from my thoughts as I notice the surroundings on the table in front of us.
"yeah sorry." I answer, a embarrassed giggle coming from my lips as I pull a strand of my newly dyed hair behind my ear.
"it's fine, I just don't want Val to worry about you too much." he says kindly, a small smile appearing on his slightly stubbled face.
"if anything she doesn't worry about me enough." I say playfully. "okay where were we?"
he teaches me the basics of cutting hair, dying hair, rinsing the hair properly, and even how to add the hair extensions and feathers that were supposedly a trend in New York these days. I can assure you, they weren't back home. home. Australia isn't my home anymore. this is my home, my new one and I always knew Australia never was.
while we put all the scissors and dye away, my stomach growls wildly, well I didn't have dinner last night and I didn't eat breakfast this morning either.
"you hungry?" drew asks me, chuckling at how loud it was.
"maybe a little." I answer sarcastically.
"well my lunch break is in about an hour if you want to come down the street with me to get something." he asks me casually.
"actually I-"
"great. see you at noon." he cuts me off, a smirk clearly written on his face,
making me blush like crazy.what if he will help me get over michael?
