"I don't have the power to save both of us."
-"holy shit, 20 missed calls from the lads." luke said to us while the taxi driver drove us home.
"that can't be good." maisie mumbled, twisting her faded hair between her fingers.
"they're probably just worried about you." I assure luke as I stare intently out the window. everything looks so familiar and I thought I forgot everything here, but I wasn't even close.
"so we're going to your house right?" maisie asks me, braiding her hair in a plait.
"yeah, I need to see my mum." I speak quietly, looking down at my entwined hands. the first thing they're going to do when I get home is probably scream at me for leaving and then ground me until I'm thirty.
"I thought you hated them?" luke spoke through the rear view mirror in the front seat.
"well, I couldn't ever hate my family, even though they didn't like what I've become, I still care for them." I said shyly.
"damn deep bro." maisie raises the mood with my laugh easing the tension.
"excuse me, um, how far out are we?" I ask the driver awkwardly.
"about five minutes, miss." he says politely. I give him a quick thank you before beginning my stare out of the window once again.
"how're you feeling?" luke asks me while his body is turned around to face me.
"fucking nervous." I honestly say, a small chuckle escaping my lips.
"it's okay, no matter what happens, we're here for you." maisie rubs my back while her and luke look at me sympathetically.
"thanks guys." I frown at what the possibilities may be when I see everyone again. they might throw me out, never want to see me again. Michael might be happy I'm out of his life and be done with me for good based on how much trouble I've caused in his life.
"I promise you he's still crazy for you." it's as if luke read my mind, I look up at him and give him a toothless smile.
"I'm just worried he's done with me." my voice croaks, my finger nails playing with the sleeves of my black hoodie.
they don't reply, and I don't expect them to. they know as much as I do when it has to do with what's to come. we all don't know, we don't know how he'll react, we don't know what'll happen.
the car jolts to a stop, and that's when goosebumps rise on my skin. I see the large, white Victorian house that I use to call home. it hasn't changed one bit, my mums suv sits in the driveway, and my dads convertible is right in front of it. like it always has been.
"you ready?" luke asks me, opening the door for me.
"not even close." I smile slightly with my body getting out of the vehicle.
"damn Ames this house is huge!" maisie exclaims, making both luke and I laugh.
"you'll get used to it after a while." I rest my hand on her shoulder as I drag my suitcase to the front door.
"we'll wait back here." she tells me with luke standing by her. the suitcase follows me after the several steps I climbed. with one look back at luke and maisie, I release the puff of my cheeks. my hands reaches for the doorbell, it all feels like slow motion. I push the button before backing up a few steps.
the sound of the lock sends my heartbeat through the roofs. then the door opens, and I see my mum for the first time in five months. she looks the same, but only with noticeable dark circles under her eyes.
