Izabelle

On the morning Kyle was having his surgery to remove the Iiizarov device from his leg, and my alarm clock went off at four o'clock in the morning, I got out of bed and trudged to the kitchen to make strong coffee before I showered and dressed.

A note in Hunter's neat scraw was taped to the hot coffee.

I prayed for you and Kyle this morning. God is with you. I made cinnamon toast and left it in the microwave. I miss you.

My heart swelled with emotion. Love. I loved him so much.

He'd left his Bible on the kitchen table. Oh, how I missed him. He'd been working long hours and we hadn't spent much time together since our date. I tried not to think about how he might be avoiding me, but I was successful only half the time. Then doubts emerged. This was when I'd pray.

When I told Hunter I didn't hear God's response to my prayers. He said to keep praying and to obey God. The closer a person was to the Lord, the more likely they would hear His voice. I set down my coffee now and took my worries to the Lord. It wasn't easy—distractions overwhelmed me—but I prayed.

I drove to Kyle's house, trying not to think about my baby brother having surgery. After all of the operations the last few months, you'd think I'd gotten used to the drill, but I had not. Each one was just as scary as the last.

Turning onto his street, I was surprised to see Lucy's car in Kyle's driveway. Strange. At first, I thought something was wrong since Lucy was his nurse, but in the back of my mind, I knew that Ava's suspicions hadn't been crazy after all.

I knocked on his door, but no one answered not that I expected them to. Using my key, I let myself in and flipped on the lights as I walked through the silent house and headed for Kyle's bedroom. That's where I found them. They were standing in the middle of his room.

My keys dropped and hit the hardwood floor with a thud that echoed in the silent room. I stepped back in shock. Lucy's surprised gaze swung to me.

"Morning, Izabelle," Kyle greeted easily like I hadn't just walked in on him and Lucy in his bedroom.

I stared in shock. They were both fully dressed and they weren't in his bed. I waited for an explanation. Guilt registered on Lucy's face, and Kyle said something but I had no idea what it was.

Spinning, I hurried from the room like it was on fire. Kyle and Lucy? It made sense. They were both believers and yet... What were they doing in his room this time of the morning?

I made a beeline for the kitchen and poured myself a cup of coffee I didn't need because I already had a major coffee buzz. Fortunately, I didn't have long to wait before they joined me. My brother looked completely at ease as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred, but Lucy's expression was wary.

"What's going on?" I demanded, getting to the point.

"Lucy came over to pray with me. You want some coffee?" Kyle asked, picking up the pot.

"No. I have coffee." My eyes darted from Kyle to Lucy.

"Lucy and I are together," he explained, pouring a mug of coffee and handing it to Lucy before making himself one. "We wanted to tell you, but you were upset about Ava, so we decided to give you some time."

"Izabelle, I'm sorry." Lucy's voice shook, and she took a step toward me, her eyes begging me to understand. "I didn't mean to hurt you or Ava."

My heart twisted because I could tell that she was genuinely upset, and I reached out to comfort her, but I stopped. I needed answers. "How long has this been going on?"
