Kate is thankful that her parents allowed Rick to stay over last night since they have a doctor's appointment this morning. But she is extra grateful because when she wakes up she notices a change. "Rick, wake up." She tells him. His eyes flutter open, "Hm? 'Ppointments not til noon. Why are you awake?" He mumbles sleepily, "I thought you'd like to see that your child decided to pop out." She tells him. His eyes snap open and he sits up immediately, "You have a bump?" He asks. She giggles and nods.
He pulls the sweatshirt that she stole from him up over her belly where he notices a slight roundness to her usually flat abdomen, "Woah." He says. She pulls his hand down so that it rests on her belly, "This is crazy." He tells her. She smiles and nods, "I know. No turning back now. I'm just going to keep getting fat." She says, "You're beautiful, Kate. You are making another human being." He tells her, "Our human being." She says before leaning in and kissing him, "I love you." "I love you too." "You know, my parents are going to be working late tonight." She says.
"I say you come over after your ASVAB and we celebrate the bump." She says seductively. He smiles, "Sounds good to me." He agrees before leaning down and pressing kisses to her bump. After a few more minutes of cuddling and loving on her growing belly, the couple gets up and goes downstairs where they find Johanna eating a bowl of fruit and sipping coffee, "Morning Mom." Kate greets her mother, "Good morning, Katie, Rick. How are you feeling?" Johanna asks her daughter, "Good. Look, your grandchild popped out last night." Kate says pulling her shirt up over her belly.
"Oh wow! Look at that." Johanna says as she softly runs her hand over Kate's bump, "Just wait til they start kicking. It's the craziest feeling in the world." Johanna tells her daughter, "I can only imagine." Kate says as Rick places a bowl of oatmeal in front of his girlfriend, "Thank you. Can you hand me the salt?" Kate asks, "On oatmeal?" Rick questions her, "Salty cravings. The baby is a boy." Johanna says, "What?" Kate asks, "Old wives tale: salty cravings means you're having a boy, sweet cravings means you're having a girl."
"I think it's a girl." Rick says, "Really? I agree with my mom, I think we're having a boy, but not because of my cravings. I just feel like it's a boy." Kate tells her boyfriend. After breakfast, Johanna goes to work while Rick and Kate get ready for her doctors appointment. After arriving at her doctor's office and having her height and weight taken, they're shown back to an exam room where Kate hops onto the exam table. It's only a few minutes later that Dr. Bells walks in, "Hello. How are you two?" She asks to which Rick and Kate reply that they're good.
"Kate, how are you feeling?" "Better. My morning sickness is basically gone. I've just been getting some headaches the past couple of days." "That's most likely due to the hormonal shift your body is going through. I'd suggest teas and warm compresses to help with the pain." Dr. Bells says, "I'm going to have you lay down and lift your shirt so I can do an ultrasound. I'm going to measure the growth of your little one as well as your uterus to make sure everything is on track and then we'll listen to baby's heartbeat."
Once the gel is applied to Kate's bump and Dr. Bells runs that transducer over it, it doesn't take much time for their baby to appear on the screen, "That looks more like a baby." Kate says as Rick presses a kiss to her forehead, "Everything looks good, Kate. There is their head, you can see it's nose and lips." Dr. Bells says, "They have your nose." Rick tells her as Kate chuckles, "And your lips." Kate says back, "That little flickering right there is their heart. I'm going to switch this out for the doppler so we can listen to it."
Dr. Bells moves the doppler around Kate's bump as staticky noises come through until they hear their baby's heartbeat. Just like last time, the noise brings tears to the eyes of both teens. "137 beats per minute. Perfect. Everything looks great, Kate. You can get your sonograms up front when you check out and make your next appointment. I would like to see you again when you are between 16 and 18 weeks along." Dr. Bells says as she wipes the gel off of Kate's bump. After confirming they don't have any questions, the doctor leaves.
Kate pulls her shirt over her bump and the couple makes their way to the front desk to schedule Kate's next appointment and pick up their ultrasounds, "Are you going to go study for the ASVAB?" Kate asks, "Yeah, I have a few hours til I have to go take it. Want me to drop you at home?" Rick asks, "Actually, can you drop me off at my mom's office. I'm gonna go have lunch with her and show her the baby." Kate says. Rick nods before driving her to her parents law firm. With a kiss, the couple parts.
Kate walks into her mother's office to find both of her parents looking over a file, "Katie, how was your appointment?" Johanna asks, "Good. Want to see your grandchild?" Kate asks to which both of her parents nod. She pulls her sonograms out of her purse and shows her parents, "I agree with Rick. Mom told me he thinks it's a girl." Jim says as he looks at the images from the ultrasound. Kate shakes her head, "It's a boy." She says confident in her mother's intuition, "Where is Rick?" Johanna asks, "He went to go study. He's got his ASVAB test at 4:00, so I asked him to drop me off here to see if you guys want to get lunch." Kate offers.
The parents take their daughter to get burgers and milkshakes at Remy's before parting, "We'll be home around 10:00 maybe 11:00, depends on how quick we wrap this case up for court next week." Johanna tells her daughter, "Okay, Rick is going to come over once he's done with his test so I'm not alone." Kate says. Her mother drives her home and when she gets inside, she quickly texts her boyfriend to wish him good luck on his test.
She sends him a mirror picture of her standing sideways with her shirt raised over her bump with the message:
Kate: Good luck on your test, Daddy. Xoxo, Kate & Peanut.
Rick: Thank you. I love you both. I'll text you when I'm on my way over.
Kate: I'll be waiting😏
She giggles knowing the text will make him a little flustered. Kate makes her way upstairs where she lays in bed and takes a nap. She sleeps until 4:30 when she gets up and goes downstairs to begin making some spaghetti for her and Rick.
She gets his text a few minutes before dinner is ready that he's on his way and five minutes later he walks through her front door. "How'd it go?" She asks as she hands him his plate and sits next to him, "I think I did pretty good." "When do you get your results?" "My birthday." Rick says, "I bet you aced it." She tells him before taking a sip of her ginger ale. They enjoy dinner and do the dishes together. Once everything is out away, she finally wraps her arms around his neck and pulls him in for a deep kiss.
"I believe we have a celebration to get to." Kate whispers in his ear before nipping the lobe. He lifts her in his arms and carries her upstairs where he lowers her onto her bed. It's been weeks since they've done this; the anxiety and fears of finding out she's pregnant plus her first trimester symptoms taking over never really made a time for this to be appropriate. It's hours later, after multiple rounds, that they are cuddled up and panting, "We need to do that more." Kate says breathily. Rick chuckles before kissing her neck, "I'm not gonna disagree with that." Rick says. Kate turns in his arms, "Ready to go again?" She asks, "Again? Geez Kate." He says in disbelief, "Pregnancy hormones. Better learn to keep up, Babe." "You're going to be the death of me woman." "What a way to go." And with that, she climbs into his lap as she begins rocking herself against him for what seems like the hundredth time that night.
Part 21! Let me know what you think! I will probably update this story one more time before the holiday. My family begins coming to town for Christmas tomorrow and then we're all traveling to my aunt's house for New Years. So, I'll try to fit one more chapter in before I go completely MIA for a few weeks.
