November 3, 2014
So far she hated the month of November. Royce woke up yesterday morning with a slight fever and runny nose and her baby boy cried for hours after taking him to the hospital where their new pediatrician diagnosed him with a cold most likely caused by his teething. She had recommended children's Tylenol and to let him sleep it off. But, this wasn't working for Kate as her baby boy wanted to be attached to his mother 24/7. This also set her even further back in weaning as he now wanted to nurse during the day.
She just got him down for a nap all snuggled up in her and Rick's bed. She hasn't had a chance to wash the sheets on his crib since his fever went down, so she makes her way to strip the mattress and throw the sheets in the laundry before spraying the mattress down with Lysol to kill any leftover germs. Once she's cleaned his room, she checks on her baby whose still passed out in the middle of the master bed. She makes sure the baby monitor is all the way up and goes back out to the living room.
She dials Lanie's number. "Hey girl!" "Hi Lanie. How's it going?" "Good. I just finished my last class of the day. How's my little snuggle bug?" "He's got a cold right now so he's not in the best of moods." "Oh no! How'd he catch a cold?" "Teething. Apparently its common along with ear infections." "Oh poor baby. How're you doing?" "I'm okay. I just haven't been able to get a lot done with him attached to my hip." "You're his source of comfort." "I know, it would just be easier to have an extra set of helping hands."
"Rick will be home before you know it and then you'll get a little time off from being a mom to celebrate being a wife." "It's crazy. If you had told me a year after graduation that I'd be a mom whose planning her wedding, I would've laughed in your face." "I know, but you two are the only ones I think could truly make it work. How's wedding planning going?" "Good. That's actually why I wanted to call you. I have a question for you." "Oh yeah? What's up?" "I was wondering if you'll be my maid-of-honor?"
Kate pulls the phone away from her ear as her best friend shrieks on the other end of the line. "Yes! Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes! Oh my God I'm so excited!" Kate laughs, "I figured you would be. I'm going to be sending you some dresses that I'll need you and Jenny to agree on because she's going to be my bridesmaid." She says. "Yes! Of course! You just let me know when you ask her and I will drag her ass to lunch." She can't help but keep laughing at her best friend's enthusiasm.
"Okay, well I'm going to call her real quick because Royce will probably be awake in a couple of minutes." "Okay! I can't wait to see you girl! You're coming for your birthday, right?" "Yeah. We'll be there for about two and a half weeks for my birthday and Thanksgiving." Kate says. "Awesome! See you then!" "Bye Lane." She ends the call and then calls Jenny. "Hi Kate! This is a lovely surprise!" The two weren't as close as her and Lanie, but she still considered Jenny to be a dear friend of hers and really wanted her in the wedding.
"Hey Jenny. How's everything going?" "Everything is going good. Kev and I are looking at apartments to move into for next year." "That's exciting! You're first apartment together." "Yeah, I'm just a little nervous. Was it a big adjustment for you and Rick to move in together?" "Well, we have a unique situation. For starters, we weren't here long before he left for deployment plus we have a baby and a lot of other factors that affect our relationship." "That's true. I know we'll be fine. I just don't want it to change anything." "My mom always said that's how you know they're the one: if you can live with them."
"I guess that's true. Well, I have to get ready to go to my psychology class, so is there something you wanted to talk about?" "Yes! Actually, I was calling to see if you'd like to be my bridesmaid at the wedding?" "Oh, Kate, I'd be honored!" "Great! I'll be sending dresses to Lanie that you guys can decide on." "Sounds great! I'll talk to you later!" "Okay. Bye." Just as she ends the call, Royce wakes up. She sighs: Back to Mom life. She gets off the couch and makes her way towards the bedroom.
"Hi baby boy." "Mama." Royce reaches out for his mother. "How're we feeling?" She coos as she settles down on the bed with him in her lap. He coughs and she can tell he's still congested. "Do you want to take a bath?" She asks. The baby just starts crying like he has the last few days. She stands, "Come on, let's go take a bath." She whispers. She starts the water in the tub and strips the baby down before undressing herself. Her mom used to tell her that when she was sick as a baby, she would lay in the bath with her on her chest and it seemed to help her get better quicker.
So, she does just that. She snuggles with her baby boy in the tub and hopes that whatever the magic touch of a warm bath and motherhood does works it's magic because if one thing is for sure, Kate Beckett hates seeing her little boy so sick. It breaks her heart to see her usually bright eyed boy sad and down because he doesn't feel good. They're not in there long before Royce falls asleep against her chest, so she kisses his curls and relaxes. Hopefully this does the trick.
Part 62! Let me know what you guys think! Next up is Kate and Royce's first time traveling back to New York since moving to North Carolina!
