More than Expected

Part 50

April 13, 2014
      Jim pulls up to the curb of JFK before putting the car in park and getting out to help with their bags. Kate holds Royce in her arms before taking the suitcase from her dad. "You two be careful, alright? Call us when you get there?" Johanna reminds her. Kate nods, "I will and we'll be back in a week." Kate smiles and hugs her parents before they each kiss the. "Love you guys." Kate says before she grabs the suitcase and heads inside the airport. "Are you ready to go see Dada?" She coos to her son.
       Once inside, Kate checks her bag before getting herself a coffee. She finds a seat and pulls her nursing cover out of her carry-on before settling Royce and nursing him so that he can fall asleep when they board and take off. Once he's fast asleep, Kate puts the cover back in the bag and holds him against her chest before sipping her coffee. A couple minutes later, their flight is announced to board. Kate is part of the first group to board since she has an infant. Once she's settled in her seat she texts her parents, Rick, and Martha.
      Two hours later, she and Royce land in Charlotte. They have a two hour layover before they board their next flight to Fayetteville. Kate pulls her phone out as Royce begins waking up, "Wanna call Daddy?" She rhetorically asks her son. The FaceTime rings for a few minutes before Rick answers, "Hey. You guys in Charlotte?" "Yep. In about three and a half hours we'll be with you." Kate beams, "I'm so excited. I was just about to shower and go check into the hotel before I made my way to the airport." "Alright, handsome, I'll let you go. We'll see you in a couple of hours." "See you two soon. Love you both so much." "We love you too."
     About a half hour before it's time to board, Kate nurses Royce to sleep once more and then they board their flight. She spends the whole plane ride trying not to shake with excitement. Once they land, Kate shoots up and grabs her carry-on before exiting the flight with Royce whose now wide awake. She walks out of the gate and immediately locks eyes with Rick. She squeezes through the obscene amount of people around her.
     The minute she's within arms reach, she and Royce are pulled into his embrace. "Hi baby." She squeals. "Hi beautiful." He greets her and kisses her cheek. She pulls back and presses her lips to his in a kiss. "I missed you so much." She whispers, "I missed you too. Both of you. Hi Bubba!" Rick exclaims as he takes his son into his arms. He presses a kiss to his chunky cheek and then wraps his free arm around Kate. "Let's go get your bag and head to the hotel. We have a busy day tomorrow." Rick says and they walk to baggage claim.

April 14, 2014
      The next morning, they're up early to get ready to go look at two apartments and a house that they've found. First, they're going to go get breakfast at a little resturant called First Watch. Once they're ready, they make their way to the resturant. They get there and both order coffee while Kate lets Rick feed Royce some baby food. "I can't believe how big he's gotten." Rick says. "I know, but in two months we'll be here and you'll get to see all of his milestones." Kate assures him.
     She showed him Royce's first tooth that officially popped through the day before yesterday. After eating their eggs benedict and waffle breakfast, the couple pack up the baby and make their way to the first apartment. It's a three bedroom and two bathroom unit. They walk in and up the stairs to the unit that's available for rent. "Wow, babe, look at the size of this living room." Kate says, "I know. And it's got a fireplace which will be perfect for Christmas time." Rick points out making his girlfriend smile. They walk around and look at every room.
      "This place is cute." Rick says, "Yeah. I kinda want to look at the house first before we make a definitive decision." Kate says, "Okay, let's go look at the other places and then we'll decide if we want to come back and fill out an application." Rick tells her before they leave the apartment and make their way to the second apartment. When they arrive, they walk into the unit available, "Oh, wow, this one is cute!" Kate says as she begins walking around. "I like that it's gated." Rick points out, "Yeah, that'll be comforting on nights when you have duty and have to stay all night." Kate agrees.
       They walk throughout the whole unit, "What do you think?" Rick says, "I love it. It has a little more space than the other one and this one seems like a little community. It has a pool and park nearby. Do you like it?" Kate asks, "Babe, I like any place that will have you and this little guy in it." Rick tells her as he kisses Royce's forehead. "Let's go look at the house, but I definitely want to put an application in on this one." Kate says.
      Before they went to go look at the house, they fill out an application and are informed that they would be notified within 24 hours to know if they got approved for a lease or not. Once the application is in, they make their way to the house. They walk inside and tour the quaint little cottage home. "This platform is cute." Kate says as she steps up on the platform where their dinner table would go. "It's nice, but that apartment has more space." Rick says, "Yeah. This place is cute, but my heart is set on that apartment." Kate agrees.
      "Then I say we go back to the hotel and see if we get approved. If not then we can look at more places or fill out an application for the first apartment or here." Rick says and Kate agrees. They make their way back to the hotel where they put Royce in the pack-and-play Rick bought for a nap. "Wanna take a shower?" Kate asks seductively. Rick smiles, "You don't have to ask me twice." They giggle as they stumble into the bathroom and share a very steamy shower while their son naps.

April 19, 2014
      Tears slide down her cheeks so easily as Rick holds them in his arms. "It won't be long." He whispers and she nods against his chest. He leans down and kisses her lips. "I love you both so much." He whispers, "We love you too." "Just think, in less than two months we'll be here together in our apartment." Rick encourages her. They got notified a few days ago that their application on the apartment was approved and they drove up there to sign the lease where they got notified that their move-in date would be June 18 of this year.
      "Alright, we'll see you soon. We love you." Kate whispers one last time, "I love you guys too." Rick whispers and kisses her lips and Royce's cheek. He watches them walk into the airport and he can't help but feel his heart clench as a piece of it leaves with them.
