I was sitting with my parents as the service ended, the funeral service for my great grandmother. I had given my speech with Sharon, and everything was fine. We handled it very well, walked up together, talked together then separated. I couldn't believe Peggy was gone was gone. She was my world.

Everyone headed to the cemetery for a small graveside burial, and I stayed at the church just sitting in the pew. I wasn't paying any attention except to my hands in my lap. I didn't come out of my trance until I saw someone's hand go over mine. I looked beside me and saw Steve looking at me. His blue eyes seemed a little bluer today, I figured from the tears I could tell he was trying not to shed.

"Summer, I'm so sorry." Steve said. I sighed.

"Thank you for coming." I said and he nodded.

"I wouldn't have missed this for the world." Steve said and I sighed. He hesitated, then sighed.

"What is it, Captain? You hesitated." I said with a smirk to the Captain, and he huffed a laugh.

"You would think I would be good in this situation, seeing everyone I have lost in my life but consoling the living is hard for me." Steve said.

"We need to teach you empathy." I said and he laughed.

"I guess so." Steve said.

"I could have taught you some if you let me be your handler." I said and gave a weak laugh as did Steve. I stood up with a sigh.

"I can't believe she is gone. I mean I was just visiting her earlier in the day, she had a cough that concerned me, but she told me she was fine." I said looking at the picture of her that was up on a stand.

"It was peaceful and, in her sleep, right?" Steve asked and I smiled with a nod.

"Yeah, she called me before she went to bed and told me she loved me and would be watching over me. I told her she was talking crazy. Then the call came in the middle of the night, she was gone." I said and Steve got up to stand next to me.

"I think you have the right to know that a year ago when we were both there at the same time, she was trying to set us up." Steve said and I huffed a laugh with a nod.

"I think she wanted to know I would be protected, and you would be happy." I said. I felt Steve hand slide in mine and our fingers intertwine. This was new, we hadn't spoken in months, but it was the comfort I needed.

"She might have been on to something." Steve said and I gave him a small smile. "Want to go get a drink?" Steve asked.

"Yes please." I said as we started to walk out. I stopped and turned back to look at Grandmas photo.

"You happy now?" I asked and Steve laughed. I blew the picture a kiss as my eyes filled with tears. "Thank you for everything. You were my everything." I said.

"I got her now Peggy, don't worry." Steve said. I looked at him and gave him a small smile. We walked out of the church and down the street to the small little pub. We walked in, I grabbed us a table as Steve went and got us drinks and ordered some food at the bar.

"I got you a burger, I hope that's okay." Steve said and set my drink in front of me and took a seat across from me.

"Perfect, thank you." I said and he smiled.

"You're welcome." Steve said and I smiled.

"Can I ask you about it?" I asked and he groaned.

"Why I left and moved out without saying anything?" Steve asked and I nodded.

"You could have talked to me." I said.

"No, I couldn't have. I didn't want to argue with you about my decision." Steve said and I looked at him oddly.

"Argue with me?" I asked.

"Come on Summer. You knew if I would have told you I was leaving the compound and moving out you would have argued with me." Steve said and half nodded.

"Don't call me out Rogers." I said and he laughed. "Why did you leave though? Me coming around couldn't have been the only reason." I said and he sighed.

"I needed the time away from it all honestly. Like I came out of the ice was thrown right back in. I needed some time to get some perspective." Steve said.

"And now?" I asked. "Do you have it?"

"I think I do. I know what I was created for, I was a weapon. I was a fighter, that's all I was needed for. Now...I just want to be Steve." Steve said and I looked at him.

"No more Captain America?" I asked.

"I will always be Captain America especially for the time being. Peggy always said I didn't know how to live without something to fight for. Now I know what I want to fight for." Steve said and placed his hand over mine on the table.

"Steve..." I said and he gave a small smile.

"I don't want to waste time Summer. We wasted almost a year since I have been back." Steve said.

"Well, you were an ass." I said and he laughed.

"Language." Steve said and I smiled at him.

"Listen, I know we can't fall into a relationship, and I just want to take time to get to know you, but I was hoping you would give me a chance." Steve said as our food was delivered, and he let go of my hand.

"I just want to make something perfectly clear..." I said.

"Go ahead." Steve said.

"If this is just happening because Peggy has died..." I said and Steve shook his head.

"No! I mean Peggy dying brought somethings to realization that I shouldn't waste any more time since time is never promised with anyone." Steve said and I smiled.

"Okay...sorry I just didn't want to get into this, and you think it a mistake." I said and Steve shook his head.

"Never." Steve said and I smiled as we started eating our food.

Once we were done eating Steve took me home. He walked me to my door.

"Thank you for today." I said and he nodded.

"I was happy to do it." Steve said. "So how about I call you tomorrow and we plan a date." Steve said and I smiled.

"Sounds amazing." I said and he smiled. He leaned in and kissed my cheek.

"Have a good evening, Summer." Steve said and walked down my porch steps as I unlocked my door. I turned to wave at Steve, and he drove away. I walked in and sighed.

"You got your wish grandma." I whispered with a smile.
