Remington
Smoke my last cigarette
You run me dry
Didn't even catch your name
You leave me wondering whyA small smile made its way to my face as I wrote the lyrics. I hadn't been in the mood to right for months, and I was finally getting some inspiration. Besides, more than a small part of me was excited to write a song about Austyn, just so I could show her. All I thought about was her. All I wanted was her. She could rip my heart out, and I'd stitch it up just to give it right back to her.
"Oh my god," Sebastian gasped dramatically, "don't tell me- I don't believe it- is Remington finally writing?"
I put my pen down and closed my notebook, "Was. You ruined it."
"Sorry." He chuckled.
"It's whatever, I get it. Sorry it took so long," I shook my head with a sigh, "did you need something?"
"Yeah." His word was slow, and hinted that something was wrong.
"What is it?" I sat up straighter.
"Uh," Sebastian scratched his neck awkwardly, "Austyn's here, and she's pretty shaken up. I don't know what happened but, figured if she'd talk to anyone it'd be you."
I sprang to my feet, and pushed past my older brother, practically sprinting up the stairs.
"She's in the living room." Emerson said quietly when I bumped into him.
I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion, and went to the living room nervously.
"Hey." Austyn smiled weakly as she stood from the couch.
"Hey," I said softly as I took her into a hug, rocking us back and forth a bit just to give her more support, "you ok?"
"Ryan came into my house." She said shakily.
"What," I pulled back from her, and placed my hands on either side of her face to get a better look in her eye, "did he touch you? Are you hurt? Look at you, you're bleeding!"
She had a cut over her cheek, and a smaller one over her eyebrow.
Austyn shushed me, and I sighed frustratedly.
"I'm ok. It's fine."
"It's not fine," I shouted, but my expression softened when she flinched, "I'm sorry, I'm not mad at you, I'm just pissed at him. Is everyone ok?"
Austyn nodded and pulled me back into an embrace. It was like she was hiding or, trying to use me as a shield, "I was the only one home."
"God," I scoffed, "I could fucking kill him. I'm gonna fucking kill him."
"It's ok Rem," She chuckled lightly, and cupped my cheeks, the way I had with hers, "I took care of it."
My eyebrows raised in surprise, "What?"
"What," Austyn played dumb, "do you have anything good in your fridge? I'm kind of hungry."
"No no no," It was my turn to chuckle as I placed a hand on her shoulder to turn her back towards me, "what do you mean you took care of it?"
She pursed her lips and shrugged before shoving her hands in her pockets suspiciously.
"Austyn," I said slowly, "let me see your hands."
"Why?" A confused expression took over her face.
"Just- let me see your hands."
"I don't see why-"
"Austyn." I said sternly.
Austyn rose her middle fingers towards me, giving me the opportunity to notice the bruises and cuts on her knuckles.
"Holy shit," I snickered, "you're fucking kidding me. What am I saying? Of course."
A bright smile took over her expression, "I told you I can handle myself."
"You shouldn't have to though," I breathed out, taking her hands in mine to examine them more closely, "you should stay here."
"What," Her eyes widened and her face held an unsure expression, "no. Remi, I can't ask you to do that."
"You didn't." I shrugged.
"And I won't let you." She stated matter of factly.
"And why the hell not," I asked. She gave me a dumbfounded look, and I returned the action, while dramatizing it, "come on! Could you imagine living together? It'd be pure chaos! Doesn't that sound like fun?"
"And what are you gonna do if he comes here?" She said worriedly.
"If he comes here," I repeated the words, earning a nod, "if he comes here. Huh, if he comes here he will- be dead."
Austyn laughed loudly, "Oh, really?"
"Yes really," I scoffed playfully, before realizing that I was still holding her hands, and pulling them towards me, "between you and me, he'd be dead, are you kidding me? Look at your fucking hands, I'm surprised he's not dead already."
She laughed again, and I laughed with her.
"Who are you guys trying to kill?" Sebastian asked confused as he entered the living room.
"I don't even remember his name." I joked.
"Remington." She said sternly.
"Sorry," I smiled sweetly, before finally letting her out of my grip and putting my focus back on Sebastian, "uh, is it ok if Austyn stays here for awhile?"
"Of course." He smiled.
It was still kind of weird to me, seeing them get along. He was so mean to her at first, I didn't they'd ever even have an entire conversation without trying to rip each other's throats out.
"You really don't have to do this for me." She whispered.
"Shush," I feigned sternness, "let's go get your stuff."
"What about Milo?"
"Milo can come too," I spoke as if her basically moving in with my brothers and I was not a big deal. It didn't feel like anything was changing. She was practically at our house all of the time anyhow, "I've always wanted a dog, and if we leave right now, we can even stop to get food on the way."
She thought for a minute, and then smirked.
"Deal."
