Remington
Cold. It was so fucking cold. I probably would've been fine if I had worn a heavier jacket, instead of just my denim one. However, I didn't plan on wondering the streets of downtown LA, in forty degree weather. Go to lunch, get an extension. That was it. Why the fuck did things always have to be so difficult? It seemed completely unreasonable that we couldn't just do what made us happy without the universe getting in the way. Maybe happiness wasn't real. Maybe it was just something someone created to give everyone a false hope. Just something to keep people alive long enough to tend to everyone else. So, what was the point? If happiness is real, it's probably almost unachievable. Why chase after something you can never have? I guess the idea of something you can't have is what makes you want it so bad. I was pulled out of my thoughts when I turned the corner.
"Fuck," She muttered, "fuck, ow! Sorry. Ow."
I took a step back to examine her face, and also get over the stinging in my hand, "Shit. Are you alright?"
This was a great way to start up a conversation!
Austyn held her nose, and I pulled a couple of unused tissues I had tucked away in my pocket.
"I came to see if you were ok," I spoke softly, gesturing for her to tilt her head back in an attempt to stop her nose bleed, "not sock you in the face, I swear you just scared me. Are you ok? I'm so sorry."
"I'm fine," She chuckled, "fuck, you have a hard fist, what the fuck?"
I laughed at her words, almost forgetting my concern, "Don't you have a jacket?"
Her head shake, was followed by a shiver. This instantly had me taking off my jacket and wrapping it around her shoulders.
"Rem," She sighed, "you have got to stop giving me your clothes."
"Oh please," A playful scoff left my lips, "I know this whole thing was just a ploy to get another one of my jackets. What happened to the first one, did you sell it?"
"I tried," Austyn played along with a shrug, "no one wanted it."
I laughed loudly at her dig, "Come on, let's get you inside. My house is only a couple of blocks away."
Her teeth chattered and her head nodded. I pulled my phone out and ordered an uber. I then pulled her into my body and wrapped my arms around her. Soon enough, a car had pulled up, and after checking with the driver, I opened the back door for Austyn, and got in behind her. Even in the couple of minutes it took to get to my house, Austyn was able to tuck herself into my side, and fall asleep on my shoulder. Her face always looked like she was ready to fight something. She always had her guard up. But, when she was asleep she looked at ease. Peaceful.
"Alright come on babe." I chuckled softly at the groan she let out in response before, opening the door to the car, and grabbing her into a bridal style position.
Our driver closed the door behind me, and wished me a good day. I thanked him and told him the same. A smile brightened my face as I made my way up the front steps, and she snuggled into me. Her ear resting over my heart, surely made her aware of how fast it was beating.
"Austyn?"
She groaned again.
"Babe I have to unlock the door," I whispered through a breathy chuckle. Her head perked up a tad, and her eyes opened slightly. She held her hand out, "my key is in my back pocket."
Without warning, her hand reached under my arm and into my back pocket to retrieve the house key, leaving my stomach, in a knotted mess. I stepped forward and she slid the key into the doorknob, unlocking it with a jiggle.
