ELVIN

I looked at her as she ate, her mouth full of food and her eyes shining

"White, do you remember the park we went to?"

"mhm" she hummed, too busy eating

I sighed "do you remember meeting me for the first time?"

She finally looked up at me "you mean that time I took your devil's device?" She chuckled "yep, I remember."

"Devil's device, really?" I pinched the bridge of my nose, hiding my smile

I cleared my throat "No...forget about it."

She swallowed her food, looking serious "there's no way you remember the other first time we met, do you?" She tilted her head "The time I put medicine on your bruises?"

"..."

She laughed "of course I remember! That was what I thought about when I first saw you again, I didn't think you would've remembered so I didn't really talk about it. I guess you do remember after all, huh?"

Something clicked, she was there before.

Flashback

"Get the fuck out of my house!" father screamed

Mama came up to me, tears in her eyes, blood on her face, bruises on her body "My sweet Eli, will you please go outside for a little while? I promise that everything will be fine here, ok? Now you have to promise me that you will not come home until I find you and tell you myself, you understand?"

"Yes mama."

"Good now go-" she got snatched away by father, she looked at me one last time with a concerned smile "go" she mouthed

I left.

After a while of walking, I got tired and sat down on the bench nearby.

I sighed

I heard footsteps, I was too tired to look

"Hi!" a girl said. She sounded my age, If not younger.

I looked up to see a little girl with pigtails having some sort of drink in her hand "I have some more! Do you want some?"

"What is it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper

"Chocowate milk."

I sighed "You're so stupid. Don't you mean 'chocolate milk'?"

She huffed "That's what I said! Chocowate milk." She tapped her chin with a finger as if she was thinking about something "Can I sit with you?" She asked

I nodded my head and scooted over a little

"Thank you!"

She sat down beside me "I'm Arya and I'm seven years old. Nice to meet you!" She smiled "What about you? How old are you?"

"Elvin. I'm eight."

"Oh that's a very pretty name." She chuckled "What are you doing out here? Are you lost? I could help you!"

"No...father is being scary so mama said to leave."

She pouted "oh I'm so sorry. My mommy's inside a store, she is nearby. Do you want some help?"

I shook my head "No. I don't like adults...they don't listen. They say it's my fault"

"Well whoever 'adults' is, he or she's a bad person." She huffed

"No you idiot. Adults means older people. Like people who are older than 16 or something."

"Ohhh that makes sense. Well anyways! My mommy's not like that but if you don't want me to call her then it's okay. I won't be pushy. I don't want to make you un- uncon-..uncover- uncovertable."

"Do you mean uncomfortable?"

"Yeah, that's what I said!" She laughed

I looked at her as she stood up

"But till then, I'll stay with you and protect you!" She gave me a big stupid toothy grin

End of flashback

It all came back to me. I looked at her as If to tell her I knew something she didn't

"Hey Eli are you okay? You zoned out." She worriedly asked

"I'm good."

"..." As she looked at her hands in her lap and knowingly smiled "I remember the other, other time when we actually first met. When you were eight and I was seven." She chuckled "I was kind of stupid but you seemed scared and my seven year old heart had gotten fond of you the moment you looked at me."

I looked at her as she stood up "As I said, I'll stay with you and protect you." She gave me a grin.

A stupid big toothy grin.

--

She laughed one last time and started walking and I followed her without a word

When I got beside her, she glanced at me with her usual smile while I couldn't stop looking at her. She looked down "Oh your shoelace is loose." She said

Before I could bend down to tie it, she had already bent down and tied it for me.

When she got up and looked away, I could feel my heart race and I couldn't help but mutter out a small cheerful "yes"

While she walked away the only thought in my mind was,

The smile that I once hated so much, is now the smile I want to be the reason for.
