I walked to school slowly, for once having plenty of time. I had left the orphanage early, probably around 5 am. Miss Michelle had been furious yesterday. I hadn't been home so i hadn't done my chores. As a result, dinner had not been made and no one had eaten. Except Miss Michelle, of course. She had gone out to eat and had yelled at me for at least half an hour.
So, that was why I was up so early. I was terrified to face the other girls, knowing how angry they would be. There anger would only grow when I pointed out to them that for once, any one of them could have cooked the meal. It's not good to invoke the anger of people you share a room with.
From the time I arrived at the orphanage, I had been saving change and small dollar bills. The problem is, when you live in an orphanage they is no privacy at all. Last year, I had over 100 dollars in quarters and dollar bills hidden under my matress, but one day I had come home to school to find it missing. I had never asked anyone about it, knowing that starting a conversation with any of the girls in the orphanage would bring on endless taunting. It's just easier not to argue. It's easier to be invisible, though sometimes people see me despite my silence.
I didn't stop collecting loose money that I found lying in the street, though. Instead of under my matress, I just began storing my money in the matress. I had cut a slit in the top of my matress, which was covered with a sheet. If the hole was ever discovered it wouldn't look suspicious, it would just seem like another hole in my bed. After all, my mattress was incredibly tattered as it was.
So, first thing this morning I had reached inside of my mattress and pulled out a few quarters for the vending machine at school. I had gotten dressed quietly and snuck out the door. I began to speed up as the weather got to me. I had never gotten cold easily. In fact, when I used to be placed in foster homes, the parents would be happy that they didn't have to buy me jackets.
Unfortunatley, the orphanage that I had been dropped in was located in Tacoma, Washington. Where it rains 9 months a year and you can always see your breath. It was always cold here, and this early in the morning, even I could feel it. I finally got to school.
As I walked in the front door,a wave of heat hit me in the face. My body instantly relaxed. For once, I was alone. All of the students were still at home, and any teachers who had bothered to show up early were in their classrooms.
I made my way to the cafeteria and put $1.50 in the vending machine and waited impatiently for the pop tart to fall. I started eating my "breakfast" as I wandered around the school. As I passed the office I noticed that there were a few students inside, speaking with the lady at the desk. As I looked closer, I realised how strange they seemed. They had perfect posture and paper white skin... aside from one.
One boy stood out, with brown skin and slumped shoulders. I finished my poptart as I watched them. I felt a burn in my throat, but ignored it. Whenever I ate anything I felt a strange burn in my throat, as if I needed water. Water never helped, though. The office lady glanced over and noticed me. She waved me inside. When I hesitated, she called out, "Renesmee!" and waved me in again.
All of the kids in the office turned and gawked at me. My face caught fire and I looked down. Slowly making my way in, she said, rather loudly, "you didn't pick up your detention slip yesterday. Give this to the teacher who sent you to the office." I nodded as I took the paper. As soon as it was in my hand, I turned and walked towards the door. "Renesmee!" she called. Turning, I met her eyes before quickly looking down again. " If you get another detention this month you will be suspended. Do you understand that?" I mumbled yes and walked out the office quickly.
I felt the stares of the mystery students on me as I left. By now, other students were making their way in to the school. I walked around to the far side of the school. It was a much longer route, but no one else went this way in the mornings. As the first period bell rang, I had just barely made it to class. I could already tell it would be a long day.
