Carlisle was completely fascinated by my newfound ability. He wanted me to show him again, but I refused. I wasn't doing anything unless Jacob was with me. Jake was the only one who made me fell safe. Evidently, Carlisle was incredibly eager to learn more about me, because he accepted my condition without question. He flashed out of the room and returned less than a minute later with Jacob.
It was obvious that Carlisle hadn't explained to Jacob what had happened. Jake rushed into my bedroom frantically, as if expecting that me to be hurt. "She's fine, Jacob." Carlisle strolled in, shutting the door behind him. Jake turned to glare at Carlisle. "You said there was an urgent matter!" Nodding, Carlisle made his way over to us. He looked at my bowl of stew, which was still mostly full. "Renesmee, finish your food." I looked at him in disbelief. After everything that had just happened, he expected me to eat?
Carlisle raised his eyebrows, daring me to argue. I sighed and picked up my spoon. "Yes, Grandpa" I grumbled. I had been going for humor, but both Jacob and Carlisle took what I said seriously. Jake looked shocked, but Carlisle looked overjoyed. His eyes shone bright, and if I didn't know better, I would think he was on the verge of tears. I knew that if I clarified that I had been joking, I would only make the moment more awkward than it already was. I stared down at my food and shoveled another spoonful of stew into my mouth, waiting for someone else to speak first.
Jacob was the one to break the silence. "Okay, fine. If she's not hurt then what's the big emergency?" Carlisle ran a hand through his hair as he considered. "Renesmee's power has gotten stronger. Significantly stronger. She no longer requires touch to transmit her thoughts. But its more than that...it's..." He sighed, not sure how to explain it. Finally Carlisle turned to me. "Nessie, I believe it would be easier if we just showed him."
I stood up, then quickly sat down when I realized that I was still only wearing a tank top and underwear. I pulled the tank top down as far as I could. It hadn't been a big deal when it was just Carlisle in the room. He was a doctor. But now Jacob was standing here, staring at me, while I sat in a chair half naked. It took a second for Jacob to realize what was wrong. He put a hand over his eyes, turning away slightly. "Aw, jeez" He mumbled. He stepped over to my dresser and pulled open a random drawer. He found a skirt and threw it in my general direction, careful not to look at me.
Carlisle caught the skirt and handed it to me. I quickly pulled it on, my face burning. "I apologize, Renesmee. You too, Jacob. I was so occupied by this phenomenon that I didn't even bother to assess Nessie's clothing." I saw Jake peek through his fingers, checking to see if I was dressed. Once he was sure that I was, he removed his hands from his eyes and walked back over. Seeming to realize that any comment he made about the situation would embarrass me further, he chose to ignore what had just happened.
"What damn phenomenon, Carlisle? You haven't given me any information, yet." Carlisle looked at me and nodded. "Show him, Renesmee." I was incredibly nervous, scared of Jacob's reaction. Not wanting to startle Jacob as badly as I had been startled by the appearance of the eagle earlier, I decided to start smaller. Hoping I could repeat what I had done earlier, I closed my eyes and visualized a butterfly. It was colorful and hazy, not realistic in the least. But it was beautiful.
I heard Jacob gasp and I opened my eyes. There, fluttering right in front of us, was the butterfly that I had conjured up in my mind. Jacob reached out to touch it, and a sort of mist appeared around it as his finger went through it. Evidently the things I created were not physical, but more of a misty illusion. I focused, wondering if I could manipulate the butterfly. I pictured it landing on Jacob's hand, and it did exactly that. It didn't even go through his hand, like I had thought it would.
