Welcome to the club

Of course, my comfort didn't last. As soon as the credits rolled, the lights were turned back on and voices were raised. I tried to wait it out, hoping the safety and sense of belonging that I had previously felt would return. It didn't. After almost ten minutes I finally accepted defeat and allowed my anxiety to guide me back up the stairs and into my bedroom. I shut the door behind me, relieved as the voices were muffled.

The relief was short lived. There was a knock on my door before I could even sit down. I considered walking to the door and opening it, but decided instead to sit on the edge of my bed. "Come in". My voice was so quiet that I wondered if the person on the other side of the door would hear me.

Evidently, they could. The door slowly opened to reveal Jacob. I smiled. He was someone I was okay with. Better than Edward, at least. Far better. Jake smiled back at me and closed my bedroom door. For once I wasn't afraid of being alone in a room with a boy. Actually, I kind of loved the idea of some alone time with Jacob. No matter how many times I told myself that he was a werewolf and I should be wary, something inside of me seemed to be drawn to him. He came to sit with me on the edge of the bed.

"Are you okay?" He asked me. I nodded, then realized that if I wanted to talk to Jacob, I would have to actually use words. "Yeah. I'm not used to... that kind of stuff. I liked it, though. The movie night. And... I liked spending time with you, too." Heat rose in my cheeks as Jacob grinned brightly at me. I noticed how white his teeth were. They seemed to shine in the brightness of my bedroom.

"You know, I'd bet that Carlisle and Esme would let you have a movie night every night if they thought it would make you happy." Jake told me. "And... you can spend time with me whenever you want, Renesmee. It doesn't have to be a movie. We could go for a walk, or cook something together. I'll even let you put makeup and a tiara on me. Claire seems to like doing that to Quil." I couldn't help but burst into laughter at the thought of Jacob wearing lipstick and a tiara. Though he was chuckling, Jake told me "I mean it, Ness. Whatever you want."

"Well," I responded. "I don't wear makeup and I don't own a tiara. I'm not a princess, you know." Leaning back, Jacob looked me up and down. "I disagree. You are definitely a princess. It's the only thing that makes sense." I rolled my eyes at him. "Okay, you're wrong. But... I was kind of thinking of maybe exploring tomorrow. This place is huge, and I don't want to get lost." Jake immediately jumped on my offer. "Yeah, of course! I'll go with you. I'll show you the little stream, and the bird's nest, and the garden hidden behind the shrubs! When do you want to leave? I'll come and meet you-"

I cut Jacob off, realizing that he would keep rambling if I didn't. "Wait a second," I laughed "You're staying here tonight. I'll just come and get you when I want to go. Is there a time that you won't be around? We can work around whatever schedule you have." Jake shrugged. "You are my schedule. Anytime you need me, or even just want to talk, I'll be here." I looked down to hide my goofy grin. I had never had anybody make such a promise to me before and it felt amazing.

Our conversation was interrupted by yet another knock on the door. Then, a voice called out, "You're not having sex, are you? I don't want to see you guys naked." I was mortified as Claire shoved the door open, but Jake looked really amused. He just shook his head and walked out of the room, flicking Claire's ear as he passed by. "hey!" Claire cried, making a face at Jacob's back as he left the room. She turned to me expectantly. I stared back, not quite sure what she wanted. Claire huffed, then ran to the door and slammed it shut. She dove onto my bed, pulling me down to lay beside her.

"Did you and Jake kiss?" Claire was so excited that I felt almost bad telling her no. Her face fell. "Oh, well...did you hold hands?" I said no again. Claire looked at me accusingly. "You didn't actually have sex, did you? Because I swear, you two were only alone up here for a few minutes." My face was bright red as I sputtered. "No! Of course not. Jeez, Claire!" I buried my face into my hands as Claire howled with laughter.
