I threw my stuff in my bag, making a loud noise of frustration when my zipper got stuck. I yanked on it, and it finally closed. I slung my backpack over my shoulders and glanced at the door wearily. I was packed and ready to leave... But how was I going to get out? My door was locked and I had pushed my desk in front of it, though I doubted it would keep the monsters out if they really wanted in. I felt as though I would pass out with how hard my breathing was.

How was I going to get around them?

I looked at the window. I faintly remembered climbing out of it once when I had... murdered a bear. I forced the memory out of my mind. I couldn't deal with that right now. I was sure I couldn't handle anything else at the moment.

I slowly slid the window open and stared down. It was a long drop. Why did I have to be on the third story? I looked over to the door. The Cullens had long since stopped trying to get me to open it, Carlisle finally convincing them that I needed time to process. As far as I knew they had all retreated to the living room, though no sounds could be heard from anywhere in the house.

I carefully placed my foot on the window sill, then let my other one dangle out of the window. I took a deep breath and forced my body to move. I paced myself and then grabbed onto the roof, using it as support as I made my way slowly across the side of the house and to the roof of the garage. Once I had my feet safely on the garage roof I calmed down, though only slightly. While I was now able to walk over to the part of the roof that was only about seven feet off of the ground, I still had to escape the yard after I landed.

I made it to the edge of the roof and then jumped down, my feet making a slight thud as my tennis shoes hit the ground. I looked at the house and slowly began to back away, keeping my eyes on the front door the whole time. When I made it to the edge of the woods I turned and sprinted. I was trying to run as fast as I could while making the least amount of noise possible. Luckily for me, I had always been a quiet person, and I was able to jump over any big twigs or particularly dry leaves on the forest floor.

After running for almost 10 minutes I began to slow down. I was just slightly winded, all the years of running between school and the orphanage giving me lasting endurance. I had to think about what I was doing logically. Obviously, I couldn't stay in a house full of monsters. But I also couldn't let my mind be overcome with fear.

I had to get away, but I couldn't just keep running into the middle of the forest. It was the middle of December - the air was cold and dry. When night came the temperature would continue to drop, meaning that I had to make it to shelter before dark. I glanced around me, hoping that I could figure out where the road was.

Thankfully, all those years of moving from house to house had given me a good sense of time and direction. 'Okay,' I thought to myself. 'The Sun rises from the east. It's past noon so it will be more towards the west right now. When I came here the Sun was behind us and it was morning which means... I have to walk in the opposite direction as the Sun. I have to go east.'

I glanced up at the Sun and began to jog away from it, hoping that my calculations were correct. After about 10 minutes I began to feel anxious. Had the Cullens discovered I was gone yet? They probably knew this forest really well - I might even still be on their property. If I didn't find the road before they discovered I was gone, I was as good as dead. Those monsters would find me and do who knows what to me.

As my terror slowly came back to me I stopped for a second, leaning against a tree in an attempt to steady myself. It was only once I stopped walking, once I was completely silent, that I heard it - the sound of cars. I gasped and looked up, trying to pinpoint which direction it was coming from. I took off in the general direction of the noise, hoping the noise wasn't just my wishful thinking. I was long past trying to be silent and now I was just running towards what I hoped was civilization.
