I got up and walked around the house. I grabbed a nearby tote bag and began to grab things: Photo albums in my mom's room, One of the pieces of paper that had the writing, and some of my mom's valuables. I headed outside my front door and sat down. Police lights filled the dark estate. Two police officers walked up to me.
"Are you the caller?" One asked.
"Shit!" I thought to myself.
"What's in the bag?"
I threw my bag at their feet, and the other police officer opened it.
"What is this stuff?" He asked.
"This is my mom's house, and I wanted to take some of her valuables with me," I explained.
"Oh, okay."
I began to be questioned about what had happened.
"Do you have anywhere to go?" The police officer asked.
"Yes," Steven said from behind them.
"Okay, we will contact you if we need anything."
"Thank you," I said.
I stood up and walked over to Steven.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah," I responded. "I-I'm just a little shaken up."
He wrapped his arms around me in a big bear hug.
"I'm sorry." He said.
I followed Steven to his car, and he jumped into it.
"Is your wife okay with this? Are you okay with this?" I asked.
"Of course, my wife is excited to meet you," Steven responded.
"What is your address?"
"15462 Jewel Street."
"Okay...I guess I will see you there."
"Yeah,"
I threw the tote in the back of my car. I headed to Steven's house. I met Steven outside, and we both walked into the kitchen. A lady with brown hair stood there, and Jonah sat at the kitchen table.
"This is Leah's kid," Steven explained.
"Hi," I said.
Waving with one hand as the tote was in the other. The lady walked in front of me and hugged me. I lost my grip on the tote, and it fell to the ground.
"Welcome," She said. "My name is Ana."
"Hi," I repeated awkwardly.
"You already know, Steven and Jonah." She continued. "Let me show you the guest bedroom."
I picked up the tote from the ground and allowed Ana to the second floor. The bed had a red confiture, next to a closet with a white door. The room had one window.
"Thank you so much," I said.
"Of course, you're family." She responded.
"What?"
"Your mom was my best friend."
"Oh."
"Kolby's your dad, right?"
"Yeah..."
Ana began to laugh.
"I knew it." She continued. "I'll leave you to get settled."
"Thank you again."
"Night."
"Night."
I placed the tote on the side of my bed and then lay down. Soon I drifted asleep. I walked into my mom's house again. A lady was standing with her back to me and had long blonde hair. I slowly approached her and touched her shoulder.
"Mom?" I asked.
She turned around, and her eyes were black holes. Blood trailed down her face.
"Find me!" She screamed.
I jolted awake. My mouth was dry. I headed downstairs, turned the light on in the kitchen, and Jonah turned around quickly. I jumped.
"Jesus!" I said.
"Sorry," He responded.
"What are you doing awake?"
"I can't sleep; what about you?"
"Same."
There was silence.
"Can I have a glass?" I asked.
"Yeah," Jonah responded.
He turned around and grabbed a glass from the cabinet. He handed it to me, and I headed to the fridge. I leaned against the kitchen table, and he leaned against the kitchen counter. Every time we made eye contact, we quickly looked away. Even with everything that happened, I still thought he was cute.
"I-" I stuttered.
"Did I do that to your neck?" Jonah asked.
"Yeah,"
"Jesus... I'm sorry."
"Sorry about your foot."
"It was self-defense."
"I know, but still."
There was another silence.
"Can we start over?" I asked.
"Of course," Jonah responded. "Hi, my name is Jonah Levy."
"Hi Jonah, my name is Arielle Lancaster. I learned I was adopted a little over forty-eight hours ago. As well as the fact my mom was killed and my dad doesn't know I exist."
Jonah offered his hand out to me. I grabbed it and shook it; then, he pulled me into a hug.
"I'm sorry," Jonah said.
"You-"I said.
"No, not about that; I'm sorry you're going through that."
I buried my face into his shoulder.
"Thank you," I said.
Jonah put his hand on my cheek. I got lost in his eyes. My face then flushed.
"What's going on?" Steven asked.
We split apart and headed back to where we were standing.
"We got water," Jonah explained.
"We couldn't sleep," I added.
"Uh-huh." Steven continued. "Keep it down."
"Sorry."
"Yeah, sorry, dad."
Steven headed back upstairs. I then began to leave the kitchen.
"Hey," Jonah said.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Let me make today up to you."
"Okay, what do you want to do?"
"Do you want to explore downtown?"
"Sure."
