I drove throughout the night. My mind was focusing on the answers. I didn't have anything except for the letter, my birth certificate, and my phone. I had an idea of where to go. The office was a big brown building; the only light came from the single street light. At this point, I needed to stop driving and sleep. I parked my car and climbed into the back, and fell asleep.
SLAM! I jolted awake. I turned to see a pair of brown eyes looking at me. I saw a man in a blue suit and black hair sticking up. I motioned him to move, opened the door, and jumped out of the car.
"Arielle?"He asked.
"Yeah," I responded.
"What are you doing in your car?"
"Sleeping clearly."
"Why didn't you get a hotel room?"
"I don't have any money."
"Okay,"
"I need answers."
"I know."
"What do you know?"
"Come with me to my office."
Steven then walked toward the glass doors of the office building. I followed him in toe. He unlocked the door, then held it open for me. He began to turn on white led lights. He then led me to a brown door with a narrow window. He unlocked the door and walked inside. I followed and stopped as he sat down in a big black rolling chair. I felt a mix of awkwardness and fear about what I would learn.
"You can sit down," Steven said.
I did what he said.
"So you've been through a lot in the past couple of hours."
"Yep."
"I'll explain your birth mother's will, and then we can go from there."
Stephen then went through the drawers of the brown desk in front of him.
"Did you know my mom?"
"Yeah, I did."
There was a moment of silence.
"How did you know I was the one outside?"I asked.
"You look like your mom."
"Oh."
Steven grabbed a piece of paper from one of the drawers and placed it on the desk. He began to mumble, and his eyes began to scan the document.
"I leave everything to my daughter, Arielle Lancaster."
I was taken aback. What? This is crazy. I had more questions than answers.
"How did she die?"I asked.
"I don't know," Steven responded.
"How don't you know?"
"It just says mysterious circumstances."
"Oh, What happened to my dad?"
"He's still alive."
"Do you know him?"
"How can't I? He's our mayor."
"Oh shit!"
There was silence.
"Can you not tell him I'm here?"I asked.
"I don't think he knows you exist," Steven responded.
"Oh, cool, cool."
"Are you okay?"
I stayed silent for a second. My mind was racing.
"I want to go to the house."
"Okay, one second."
He dug into his desk and then tossed them to me.
"There you go."
"Thank you for everything."
"What do you plan to do?"
"Go to the house and go from there."I continued. "Don't tell anyone about me...please."
He gestured, zipping his mouth shut.
"Thank you again," I said, standing up.
"If you need anything, you have my number," Steven explained.
"Thanks, bye."
"Bye."
I left the office building and headed to my mom's house. Well, I guess it's mine now.
