I grabbed a ladder from the side of the house and threw it on the roof. I took a deep breath and climbed down slowly. I walked to the house's entrance, and Jonah punched me. My face went numb, and I fell to the ground as blood flowed from my nose.
"Babe?" Jonah asked.
"Jonah, what the fuck?" I asked.
Blood fell onto my shirt.
"Let me check it out," Jonah said.
He squatted next to me. I unveiled my nose to him.
"Jesus... I'm so sorry. I thought you were the person who started the fire." Jonah explained.
Sirens surrounded the house. As well as the flashing lights.
"Where is your mom?" I asked.
"I don't know," Jonah responded.
The fire truck drove up the driveway, and the ambulance was beside it. Our heads turned when I saw my car, and I got up and ran to it.
"Ari!" Jonah chased after me.
Shattered glass was everywhere. I threw my car door open. I dug into my center console. I grabbed everything I could. Glass was cutting my arms as I did it.
"No!" I kept repeating.
"What are you doing?" Jonah asked.
I grabbed everything I could and got out of the car. Jonah sat down next to me, and I put my head against his shoulder, and Jonah kissed my forehead.
"What are we going to do?" I asked.
"I don't know," Jonah responded.
The corgi popped his head out of the tote.
"Charlie?" Jonah asked.
Jonah grabbed the dog while tears were streaming down his face.
"Awe, Jonah!" I said. "Everything will be okay...we still have my mom's house." I continued. "We will figure this out together."
I kiss his cheek again. We put our foreheads together, and we will to the best of our abilities. An EMT walked up to us.
"Can you follow me?" He said.
"Why?" I responded.
"You have a bunch of injuries."
"Oh, true."
I kissed Jonah, got up, and followed the EMT to the ambulance. I sat on the edge of the ambulance as the Emt gathered supplies inside. He then stood in front of me, and he looked highly uncomfortable.
"What?" I asked.
"I'm not going to lie, but this is going to suck." He explained.
"What are you going to do?"
"Put your nose back into place."
"That's what I thought."
"I'll count to three; first, take a deep breath."
I shook my friend and took a deep breath.
"3...2...1." He counted.
Immense pain shot through my face.
"FUCK!" I screamed.
"Yeah, sorry about that."
The EMT then began to clean blood from my nose. Then he packed it with gauze and medical tape.
"Did you find anyone in the house?" I asked.
"No, why?"
"Not even a body?"
"No," He continued. "Why?"
I took a deep breath and then pointed at Jonah.
"His mom was the only other person in that house."
"Oh shit."
Jonah walked over to us, holding the tote. The Emt began to bandage up my arms. A cop then walked over to us. We both looked at him.
"We need you for questioning." She explained.
Jonah and I looked at each other.
"Yes, both of you." She said.
The Emt finished bandaging my arms, and we were ushered in a police car.
