Y/n sat on a chair opposite the talk show host, she fiddled with the hem of her outfit as the host began to speak.
"Hello and welcome back to Hero Hour! My name is Hana Tanaka and today we're joined by a very special guest. She's a student at our very own UA High School and a future pro hero, Everyone please welcome, Maestra!"
The camera view widened, revealing Y/n's presence in the studio. A round of applause erupted from the studio audience.
"Now, Maestra, You've hinted at something revolutionary, a secret that could shake the foundations of heroism. Care to share some more?"
Y/n hesitated for a moment, carefully picking her words. Her eyes twirled with determination and apprehension. "Yes, I can."
Hana, the talk show host, and the audience leaned forward, intrigued by what was about to be said.
"The truth is... The heroes have been lying to you."
The rain beat down upon her bedroom window, car and street lights engulfed the soggy road; lights from the shops reflected off the puddles on the pavement creating a plethora of colours. Y/n sat on her window sill, peacefully bobbing her head to the music from her headphones. It was a surprisingly quiet night, the sun had set hours ago leaving the dark to drown the city of Musutafu. The streets were nearly silent, the main noises being heard coming from the passing of cars and the scattering footsteps of people trying to escape the ever-pouring rain.
Y/n's room was dark, the only light radiating from the numerous vanilla-scented candles scattered around; they left a soft orange hue against the wall they were sat near. She turned her hand towards a candle and moved her fingers in a twirl-like motion causing the flame to grow slightly. It danced around its wick playfully, growing and shrinking at will as it moved in a spiral-like motion, copying the movement of Y/n's fingers. The constant movement eventually caused the flame to die. Y/n sighed and used the remaining embers to ignite the candle again before leaving it be; she rested her head against the cold window once more, continuing to watch the rain.
This was Y/n's quirk. 'Fire manipulation' as she called it. She could control fire at will, manipulating it in different ways based on how her fingers were positioned. If her fingers were loose and used soft movements the fire would be smaller and remain pretty stable, if she concentrated hard enough she could lift it from its source and float it in the air, manipulating it as she pleases. If her fingers were tense and her movements sharp, the fire would grow larger and be unstable, you could compare it to a blazing forest fire growing out of control every second; it was also hot, extremely hot.
Usually after telling people her quirk, they would assume it's similar to the pro hero Endeavour, being able to conjure fire out of thin air when it was quite the opposite. For Y/n to be able to control fire, the fire has to already exist. Whether that be in the form of a tiny ember or a raging blaze, she can only control it if it's pre-existing.
This caused Y/n to believe her quirk was useless so she never tried to train it or get it under control. Other people would start training and trying to understand their quirk as soon as it manifested, not Y/n. She tried for a few months with her father who had a similar quirk but it amounted to nothing, plus the teasing from her childhood didn't help with her confidence when it came to her quirk. Of course, it grew stronger as she grew but this also meant it was as unpredictable as when it first manifested and far more dangerous.
