Two of hearts

___

It was the morning Y/n was starting at Aldera Junior High and she was beyond nervous, starting a new school in a country she hadn't lived in since she was a child was stomach churning and it made everything so much worse knowing she would be a year older than everyone in her class. It wasn't something unfamiliar to her, she had always been the oldest in her classes due to being held back a year when she was a child but she could never shake the teasing people in her class would do, she was often mocked for being held back. Everyone always assumed she was held back a year because of her grades, calling her stupid and dumb. While she didn't like it, it was something she had grown used to, it was the same in every school but it was a million times better than what people would say if they knew the real reason she was held back.

Her nerves for the day only grew when her parents told her to sit down because they wanted to discuss something important with her. It scared her in actuality, her parents were constantly at each other's throats so for them to agree on something for once was oddly terrifying.

Silence fell upon the room, Y/n stared at her parents as they sat across from her. She balled her fists under the table, digging her fingernails deep into her hand which left purple crescent moon-shaped marks in her palms. She grits her teeth, feeling them grind against each other. It was the only way she could cope with whatever her parents were about to tell her.

The tension in the room felt thick and suffocating, a knife would struggle to saw its way through. It felt like a war, two against one.

Y/n vs her parents.

"Y/n, I want you to listen to me carefully and I don't want any backchat. I can always change my mind." Sora, Y/n's mother, said. Her tone was strict. "If I allow you to attempt to apply for UA..."

Y/n's breath hitched. UA? Her mom was considering it? Her dad had convinced her? She felt her heart pound slightly, terrified of her mom's words.

"You are to apply under the category of a quirkless student."

Her heart dropped and her jaw fell slack. She looked over to her father who wore a guilty expression.

"What? why!?" Y/n asked, her tone snappy.

Sora sighed, looking down her nose at her daughter. "You have no control over your quirk, Y/n. It's dangerous and unpredictable."

Y/n furrowed her brow and scoffed. "You have that little trust in me? You genuinely distrust me that much." Y/n said, her tone dripping in annoyance.

She looked over to her dad and shot him a disgusted look. "Dad, are you seriously going to say nothing? You're the one who told me that if I could get my quirk under control in some way you'd let me try! And that means try with my quirk!" As Y/n had begun to yell, the candle that was lit behind them to try and mask the smell of dampness in the apartment began to grow and flicker, something her parents took notice of.

"Y/n-"

"No, Dad! You told me you believed in me! you told me you'd support me no matter what because I'm your daughter. And now you change your mind to do what? keep mom happy?" Y/n scoffed and pointed at her mother.

The flame of the candle had begun to spark, crackling as the flame grew larger and larger. It had now begun to leave singe marks on the wall. It crackled and popped, the flame swelling every time she spoke.
