Another day another shift. i am on south corner with my favourite boyyy Jake. and we were sitting in the buggy, it was a very hot day. And the beach was packed. it was about 2pm and my shift started about 3 hours ago. it's been hectic. The rip was sucking people out for hours. rescue after rescue for everyone on the lifeguard service.
"how you doing?" Jake asked.
"i'm ok Jakeyboy. it's just hot." i replied.
"you really going to keep calling me that?" he asked.
"yes. it's my favourite. why don't you like it?" i asked.
"eh it's fine i guess i'll call you Kate." he smiled. knowing full well i hate that name. i just stared at him as he looked out at the ocean pretending not to notice my death stare i was giving him after about 30 seconds he burst out laughing. causing me to start laughing. "i know i know you hate it i'm sorry. i do like the nickname though." he said after we stopped laughing. "no one calls me kate or katie." i said seriously. "ok kitty cat." he mused. i smacked his arm. but smiled at him...
*hey guys at south. there's a women about a kilometre out the back she seems to be in a bit of trouble she's very far out aye* i hear Chappo's voice down the radio. i stood up trying to spot said woman. *yeah i see her she's miles out*
*yeah maybe go out there's no way she's getting back in* he replied.
"i'll go for a paddle." i said to jake. as i ripped off my shirt, hat and sunnies. i picked up the board and started the long paddle out. when i was about half way out. I saw her hand fly up. i knew it wasn't a time to take a quick breather i had to get out there asap.

once i reached her. she clenched onto the board. "thank you." she said between breathes. "what are you doing out this far?" i asked. sitting up. "i drifted out. i didn't even realise how far out i was. i'm sorry." she said. "no worries. just rest for a minute and we'll get you in." i said.

once she started to get on the board. i heard the familiar sound of the shark alarm. oh no. not now.

Jake's pov.
when i heard the shark alarm. my blood ran cold.
*hey boys is there a shark?* i asked down the radio.
*yh Jake, we've had a few reports of a shark* Chips replied
*where abouts man? Caitlin's out there doing that rescue.*
*yeah i know i can see her. there was reports of the location in multiple places. mixture between north and centre flags out the back* i heard.
*shit*
*don't panic man. the heli is coming over to search the water*

i stood on the back of the buggy to keep an eye on Caitlin. There was multiple people who had come up to ask about the shake and i responded with "i don't know" "possibly" and "they are searching now."

Caitlin's POV:
the patient started panicking as soon as she heard the alarm.
"hey it's ok calm down." i said.
"no no shark shark!!!!" she screamed out. i looked back to the beach. to see Jake standing on the buggy. looking straight at me. everyone else was getting out the water.
"we don't know there's a shark it's just a possibility. please just stay calm." i reassured her the best i could because i was absolutely freaking out. Not a fan of sharks especially when there's two people on just a rescue board.

the helicopter had come over from north and was slowly making its way south. meaning they hadn't found the shark yet until they decided to hover right over me. and that's when i saw it.
The shark about 2/3 feet away from us. ok ok caitlin don't panic. breathe be professional. i tried to signal back to the beach by pointing to the shark. and making a fin above my head. that's when the patient saw it.

jakes pov:
holy shit the shark is right by caitlin. we have to get the ski out.
*boys did you see caitlin's signal* i asked down the radio.
*yeah we did we are prepping the ski now* Chappo said
*do you want me to go out* i was worried for her she's only just come back and now she's faced with a shark.
*theres no need stay in your position for when they get them back. Jesse's heading out.* Chappo reassured me although i wanted to go out there to make sure she was ok.
*whip to jake i'm on my way down to you with Reidy.* he said

Caitlin's Pov.
she started panicking and the board was rocking. "hey hey calm down for me on you have to keep as still as possible." i panicked. holding onto her arms. "i- it's right there. it's circling us. we are going to die." she was going into a panic. "hey just breathe focus on me don't look at the shark. tell me your name." i said as calmly as i could, given the certain circumstances. "j-jess. my names Jess." she said then proceeded to take deep breathes. "that's good, breathe. well Jess i'm caitlin. and we are definitely going to be fine ok." i told her. "i'm sure the lifeguards are already launching the jetski to come and get us. we just have to wait. ok." she nodded. The waves were still going under the board. shaking it. and then i heard the familiar sound of the jetski . i turned my head for a second to see Jesse as they'd just launched it off the buggy. they shouldn't be too long. But that's when things had turned for the worse.

Jakes pov.
i was stood with Whippet and Reidy. watching Jesse launch the jetski.
"she's going to be fine mate, Jesse will get her, i'm sure the noise of the ski will deter the shark back out to sea." Reidy patted my back. i told him i knew it would. she'd be fine. but yet i watched anxiously. she was watching Jesse, and didn't see the oncoming set that we could see from the shore. "hey she hasn't seen the set coming in. that'll knock her off." I said to the boys as i tried to get her attention by waving my arms in the air. Whip jumped on the buggy grabbing the megaphone. "caitlin the set behind you!!" he yelled. but she didn't hear in time she looked at us. but the wave crashed into them throwing them from her board. as the wave came into shore. we couldn't see her from our positions.

caitlin's pov.
i was panicking we were both thrown from my board, right where the shark was circling us. I swam to the surface. Looking for Jess i saw her clinging to the board. "get on the board!" i yelled. starting to make my way over. I stopped, realising i could see the shark anywhere, and continued again. Once i climbed back onto the board. i saw the shark swim right under my board. "holy shit." i muttered. "are you ok?" i looked at Jess, she was white as a ghost. she just nodded. And the next thing i know, Jesse was pulling up beside us. "are you guys ok??" he asked. "yeah we're fine just get us back to land." i begged. he held out a hand and we got onto the back of the mat. Jess got on behind Jesse and i held onto the matt dragging the board up with me. and we headed back in.
once we reached shore. i relaxed a little bit and i told Jess to swim between the flags next time and not to head out so far. She promised me that after that experience she will never not swim between the flags again. I'm surprised she'd ever want to go back into the ocean again. because i wasn't sure i would for a second there. "thank you Jesse for coming to get us. pretty wild hey." i said after he'd beached the ski.
"yeah man pretty close." he smiled.
Jake, whip and Reidy came running down to the shoreline. "are you ok??" jake asked. "yeah all sweet." i said as he passed me a towel. "you seem to be always in trouble." Whip said. "Yeah are you alright though? seriously." Reidy asked. "boys, it was just a shark, nothing i can't handle." i laughed. Jake looked a bit more serious. but the other two joined in with my laughter and after hugging Jake he relaxed a bit. "what am i going to do with you?" he asked. "i don't know what are you going to do?" "i'm going to lock you away forever so you can't get yourself into any trouble at all." he hugged me tighter. "ugh get a room." Whippet said. "come one let's drive up to the tower it's about time we changed shifts." i said and we all hopped into the two buggy's and drove back up.

after the whole shark incident, the beach had returned to its normal but crazy self, and i was in the tower for the rest of the afternoon, it was me, Deano and Singlets. And the day went by quickly. Me and Jake headed out at about 6, we caught a movie and went back to my home to sleep of the past events. let's see what tomorrows shift brings, as i'm on all day from set up to pack up. Lucky for him Jake has the day off tomorrow. and he's going to spend it with his family.
