While Clary was over in New Jersey, enjoying her new found life, Jace was back in New York, more miserable than ever. Over the next four years, he continues dating Bethany. Because Jace is so depressed over Clary, he doesn't go out much. He also can't go looking for Clary because he fears that it might cause her to never want to see him again. Well, more than she already doesn't want to.
Here are some highlights over the past four years of his miserable life.
Jace
It'd been two weeks since Clary had run away, and Jace was pretty much fed up with everyone. He had been approached by just about everyone he knew, like Magnus, Alec, Isabelle, even Maryse. All of them had given him the exact same talk, just in different words. They all said something along the lines of "If you love Clary, go after her and dump Bethany." They were right. Except he couldn't go after Clary because Brother Zachari-er-Jem told him not to. Jem told him that searching for Clary would only make her hate him more, so Jace knew it wasn't a good idea. It was best to let her come to him when she was ready. Jace also couldn't dump Bethany. She came in very handy when he wanted to 'keep busy'.
Jace was up in the training room with Isabelle around noon. He was usually up here because that's where he spent about 90% of his time. The other 10% was being with Bethany or sleeping. He and Isabelle were sparing, and so far, Isabelle was winning.
"Ok what's wrong?" asked Isabelle. They were currently sitting on the benches along the sides of the wall, taking a break. "I'm barely trying, yet I'm still winning."
"I don't know Isabelle, maybe it's just my freaking GIRLFRIEND IS GONE AND I MISS HER SO FUCKING MUCH." That outburst came out of Jace unexpectedly, but he didn't take it back. He'd held it in for so long.
Isabelle's facial expression softened for a split second, but then it returned. She walked over to the door and opened it, then paused. "I'm going to go get some food. If you want any, you can follow me. Otherwise, stay in here and sulk about how you chased the only happiness you had away." Then she left.
'How could Isabelle be so unsympathetic?' Jace thought. But he knew she was right. He also knew that he didn't deserve any sympathy for what he did.
He'd tried explaining to Isabelle what happened, but she always lashed back with more excuses that made Jace feel worse. It was pointless. So Jace just decided to shut everything out and keep to himself.
All of a sudden, Jace heard a knock on the door. 'It's probably Bethany.' Jace thought. He wasn't in the mood to see her, so he just stayed there. Then another series of knocks came, more vicious then the one before.
Annoyed, Jace stood up and walked over to the door. He opened it, and to his surprise, he saw Simon. "I assume you're here to yell at me about how stupid I am to cheat on Clary?"
"Nope." said Simon. "I'm here to beat the shit out of you because you both cheated on Clary, and you made her leave everyone." With that, Simon slapped Jace square across the face, and drove him to the ground, punching and kicking at him.
Simon
Using all his strength, Simon punched Jace around, doing as much damage as possible. He was almost certain that he gave Jace a black eye, and a broken jaw. Then he got up and started kicking Jace around like a soccer ball. He wasn't fighting back, so Simon just continued, trying to get as much anger out of him as possible.
"Simon! What are you doing! Stop kicking Jace!"
Simon turned around and saw Isabelle staring at him with her mouth open in shock.
