Jace
"YOU BOTH DID IT AGAIN DIDN'T YOU!" yelled Izzy as Jace and Clary walked back into the main part of the cave.
Jace smirked as Clary's face turned red.
"No," Clary snapped.
"Yeah whatever." Isabelle didn't look convinced. She probably didn't pry on it because she didn't want to embarass Clary anymore.
"Okay well you two better hurry and pack because we are all ready to leave and I for one don't want to wait for you two." Isabelle grabbed her bag and started out of the cave with the others.
Vanessa walked up to Clary and Jace, and shoved a can to each person. "You guys can eat while we walk. Bon appetit!" She followed the others out of the cave.
"Here hold this." Clary handed her can to Jace, then walked over to roll up the sleeping bags and clean up their stuff.
"You know I can help you, right Clary?"
"Yeah, I know." She got up with a backpack and the sleeping bags in her hands. "I just do it faster alone."
Jace rolls his eyes, and grabs the sleeping bags from Clary's hands. They both start making their way out of the cave where their friends were waiting for them.
"Okay, let's go. Sebastian's fortress is that way," said Jace, after the couple had reached their friends.
The group didn't say much as they walked. Clary was walking with Simon, which left Jace at the end of the group alone. He was fine with it though because he needed to think and try to clear his mind.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
Jace looked up to see his parabatai walking next to him. "You know what's wrong."
Alec nodded. "I do. I was just trying to be polite instead of assuming."
Jace stifled a laugh. "I have this terrible feeling that we are going to walk in there, and Bethany is going to show up and Clary is going to end up dead. Then all of this, all of the attempts to rekindle our relationship, will be for absolutely nothing. If I never dated Bethany, this wouldn't be happening. I don't understand how I could be so stupid. Clary could die, and it'll be all my fault, because I made the stupid mistake to date someone just for sexual satisfaction."
"You can't blame yourself if Clary dies. And she won't, we will all make sure of it."
"You don't know that," snapped Jace.
Alec held his hand up in surrender. "I'm sorry, but she's perfectly capable of handling herself. I mean, she broke us out of Bethany's cage with her bare hands. If Clary can do that, then she can do anything."
It was weird, Alec complimenting Clary. Jace remembered the first time he had brought Clary to the Institute, Alec had hated her. But now, they were like family. "Thanks. I know you weren't always okay with Clary, but it's good you're cool with her now."
"I was 'cool' with her a while ago. But why is it so good now?" asked Alec, scrunching his fingers to indicate quotations when he said the word cool.
Jace hesitated, but he didn't know why. This was his parabatai, he could tell Alec anything. "Because I was thinking of proposing to her once this all is over."
