Chapter 15

Clary

They had been walking for what seemed like hours. Occasionally, Magnus would complain about how he couldn't believe that they walked so much the first time around, but he didn't sound like he was tired.

Jace stopped abruptly, causing Clary to walk right into him. He steadied her, then looked around. "Wait. This looks familiar."

"This whole place looks the same on all directions. You probably recognize it from the billion other hills we walked by." said Simon.

Clary looked around. Simon was right, it did look like the other hills they walked by, but Clary had this feeling that it was different. She started up the hill, dragging Jace along with her. He wasn't too pleased by this, but when they reached the top, there was a cave. "This is the cave from before."

"How are you so sure?" asked Lilly.

Jace pointed at the cave. "There are the protection runes that were there before. Come on, even if it isn't from before, it's the best we got." He started for the cave, then stopped. Jace pulled out his seraph blades, then turned towards the group. "Last time we were attacked by a creepy flying demon. You can never be too careful."

"Last time, you road the creepy flying demon and almost got yourself killed." mumbled Alec as he pulled out his bow and notched one arrow in.

Jace ignored Alec. "Keep a lookout for any strange clouds."

"Why, will the clouds start attacking us or something?" retorted Kyle.

Jace shrugged. "There's a possibility. It happened before."

Kyle's face went white, but they kept moving towards the cave.

The group made it safely inside without any demon attacks. Once in, they made their way towards a gate covered in runes. Kyle made an effort to open it, but when he failed, Jace shoved him aside and yanked it open.

"I loosened it for you." mumbled Kyle as they all walked passed him.

"Are you sure this is safe? Do you guys even know where you're going?" asked Vanessa.

"Of course. Up ahead will be a large dome room that will branch out into two different tunnels." said Jace, shutting the gate and motioning up towards the darkness.

Isabelle, Vanessa, and Jem pulled out their witchlights, and started walking through the now lit up tunnel. They soon made it towards the dome room, which Clary thought was smaller than last time.

"We're going to have to go check out the tunnels." said Jace, dropping the food bags on the floor. "Isabelle and Simon can take the east tunnel while Alec and Magnus take the other tunnel. Jem and Vanessa can start making us dinner. The rest of you can set up camp while Clary and I go and redraw the protection runes. They look as if they're fading."

Everyone nodded, then went about doing their assigned jobs, when Kyle called out, "Why do you get to choose who does what?"

"I didn't see anyone else doing so. If you're not okay with it, then go ahead, you can choose who goes where."

"Alright, I will." Kyle looked around. "Why don't Lilly and I go scout the east tunnel, while Alec and Isabelle scout the other one. Vanessa can make dinner herself, and everyone else can set up camp. Then yo two can go draw your runes."
