The next couple of days turned into weeks, and I was getting used to the school. I usually hung out with Jake and the rest of them. I’d occasionally hang out with Sami and Julie, too. My mom called a couple of times over the past couple of days.
“When are you coming?” I whined as Jake and I were doing homework on my bed. My mom chuckled on the other line.
“Soon Ruby. I just need to fill out some paperwork, sell the house, and then I’ll be home,” she responded.
“You said that last month,” I accused. I could almost see her roll her eyes.
“Yeah well, be patient.”
“Patience is a virtue I was never granted with.” Jake chuckled as did my mom.
“So tell me, how’s school? How’s Kim doing?”
“It’s all been pretty good. Kim’s Kim, being crazy, yanno.” She laughed.
“You two better not be getting in to trouble,” she warned.
“Mom, you know us better than that,” I teased.
“I know you two, too well.”
“Well I mean, I am your daughter…” She chuckled.
“So tell me, meet any boys?” I blushed. When I didn’t respond quickly, she gasped. “Who?!” Jake smirked.
“Ma, you sound like a sixteen year old teenage girl,” I accused. She laughed.
“Well I do have a sixteen year old daughter that acts like this all the time…” I laughed.
“Good point.”
“So who is he? What’s his name?”
“His name’s Jacob and he’s with me right now,” I admitted.
“Am I on speaker?”
“Don’t worry, you’re not. But if you’re thinking about embarrassing me, don’t worry. Kim already did.” I grimaced as Jake laughed.
“That’s my girl.”
“I thought I was your girl.” I pouted.
“You’re my daughter, that’s different.”
“I don’t see a difference.”
“That’s because you’re not that smart honey.”
“Mom! You’re not supposed to say that! You’re supposed to be telling me how smart and amazing I am.” She laughed.
“What’s the point of telling you all that when you already know it?”
“Eh, good point.”
“So when do I get to meet this Jacob?”
“When you come home.”
“Don’t scare him off by then,” she teased.
“Mom, you’re so mean to me.”
“I love you baby!” I laughed.
“Love you too Mom.” She sighed.
“I have to go honey, I’ll call you later. Love you, and stay safe, okay?”
“I will Ma, don’t worry. If I get hurt, Jake’ll take care of me,” I said. Jake grinned and pecked my cheek.
“Mind if I speak to him real quick?”
“Uhm…” I faced Jake. He shrugged. “I guess.” I handed him the phone.
“Hello… it’s really nice to meet you too Mrs. Koshi… I promise…. I know she’s special… Billy Black, he’s from La Push… yeah… will do… nice meeting you… bye.” Jake hung up and handed the phone to me. I set it on the table and crawled into his lap. His arms wrapped around my waist.
