A/N - This one wasn't exactly inspired by anything, it was just a little thought that came to me, so I used It Must Be Love by Madness to name it. For this, Reader is Hopper's daughter. I hope you all enjoy it.
Billy had been sitting out in his car at the end of your driveway for the last 20 minutes, praying that the clock on his dashboard was dead on time. When you'd asked him to come over for dinner, mentioning in passing that your dad would be joining you since he wasn't working nights this week, he'd agreed rather reluctantly.
It's not that he didn't love you, he loved you more than life itself, but he was definitely a little anxious about meeting Chief Hopper in person for the first time. He'd heard stories from other kids at school and knew that he would be a hard nut to crack. But then, he'd also heard how you spoke about him like he was the biggest, cuddliest teddy bear going. If anything, that only made it harder. Billy didn't have a clue what he would be walking into when he entered your house.
Finally, as the clock hit 7:58, Billy climbed out of the car and walked up the path to the front door with his breath stuck in his throat. You'd tugged the door open the second he'd knocked, grinning wildly at him and pulling him inside.
"You're early," you teased, pressing a quick kiss to his lips and leading him through into the kitchen. "Dad called to say he was on his way home 10 minutes ago, so he shouldn't be long," you rattled on, immediately moving towards the stove and checking on the food. "He got held up at work-"
"Is he going to hate me?" Billy uttered, interrupting your rambling mid-sentence, and you causing you to turn to look at him quickly, your brow furrowed with concern.
"Baby," you hummed softly, a small frown pulling at the corners of your lips. "Why would he hate you?"
Billy shrugged slightly, his gaze turned on his feet as you watched him carefully. "Because I'm dating you," he answered before shrugging again. "Dads can be really overprotective sometimes and-"
"Hopper is tough, but he just wants me to be happy," you interjected, moving forward to take his hands in yours, giving them a comforting squeeze. "He won't hate you unless you give him a good reason to, alright?" He nodded, watching a small smile flutter onto your lips. "He might take a little while to warm up though, so just give him some time."
Billy nodded again, smiling softly at you as you leaned in to kiss him, only for the sound of the door opening to interrupt you before you could make contact.
"You must've broken every speed limit in Hawkins," you called out, chuckling when you heard a grunt of agreement from the other room. "Come meet Billy," you pressed on, releasing his hands and returning to your spot in front of the oven.
When Hopper had walked into the kitchen, all of your reassurance had escaped Billy in a second. If the straight face wasn't enough, the uniform definitely scared the life out of him.
"Dad, this is Billy Hargrove," you hummed, sending them both a soft smile. "Billy, this is my dad," you pressed on, almost bursting into laughter when the two of them just looked at one another for a moment.
"It's nice to meet you, Sir," Billy started, scrambling over himself to offer up a handshake, only for Hopper to look down at it like it was a completely alien creature. "Y/N's told me a lot about you," he added, clearing his throat as he let his hand drop back to his side.
Hopper nodded. "She's always had a knack for storytelling," he uttered, moving past the both of you to grab a beer from the fridge.
"Billy plays basketball," you presented, attempting to gently nudge the conversation along. "He's a- shit, what was the term, baby? A Strong Forward?"
