A/N - This chapter was inspired by the song Toxic by Ashnikko. This is a modern AU where Eddie is a well-known rock star and Reader is a famous pop singer. I hope you all enjoy it.

"I wrote and produced every song she ever made. All she ever had to do was walk up to the mic and sing. She would've been nothing without me-"

You could feel your jaw twitch as you watched the interview, listening intently as your ex lied to the public in an attempt to take you down a peg. He'd always been a little self-involved, but you'd sort of assumed that after cheating on you, he would at least leave you alone. You'd seen all the other celeb couples split so amicably, with the matching Instagram posts. You'd hoped, that even though he had hurt you, you would be able to be one of those pairs of exes. You'd wanted to just let the relationship slip out of the public view and into obscurity.

But no. Here he was running his mouth about your career, taking credit for something that he hadn't ever had a hand in.

You finally scrolled away from the video playing on your phone, letting your head fall back against the wall in your agent's waiting room, your eyes pressed closed. This was stupid. You had already released multiple best-selling albums before you'd even met him. You'd won awards before you even knew he existed.

"No one believes that shit, you know?"

You practically leapt out of your skin when you heard the voice coming from the doorway, your eyes shooting open to glare at the man watching you.

"Sorry," he uttered again, an awkward half-smile pulling at his lips. "Didn't mean to scare you."

You shook your head slightly. "You didn't-"

He snorted at your comment, moving a little further into the room and taking one of the other seats, still smiling at you. "The guy's an idiot; everyone knows Shaun isn't capable of creating the stuff you make," he pressed on. "No one's buying it, Sweetheart; you haven't got anything to worry about."

For a moment, you stayed quiet, watching him carefully. You knew who Eddie was, Hell, everyone knew Eddie; he'd been in enough trouble through the years to be recognisable. Finally, you nodded. "Thanks," you murmured before turning your attention back to the phone in your hands.

"You know," he hummed, drawing your attention back up to him. "If you really want to prove him wrong, you should put out another song ASAP," he continued. "Something that really tells him where to shove it."

You let out a soft snort of laughter. "He would love the attention too much-"

"But, anyone who had any doubt about your ability would realise what an idiot he was," Eddie interrupted. "And, you'd have a guaranteed hit on your hands, right? Everything you write hits the top ten."

You hesitated for a moment. "Right," you confirmed quietly. "Except, I'm pretty sure Clark would be less enthusiastic about it," you added, nodding towards the office door where your agent had his name printed.

Eddie shrugged slightly. "What if we tell him I'm working with you? I mean, who would even think to put us together? It'd get people talking; up sales for us both; it'd be all over the gossip sites."

*Time Skip*

You felt a little sick as you waited backstage, minutes from being announced to the crowd. The host had been over the moon when your agent told him that he would have the first performance of your new song. It hadn't been made available yet. No one outside of your production crew had ever heard it. And for the next couple of seconds, no one knew that Eddie had anything to do with it.

The curtain pulled back, leading you out onto the stage and straight up to the mic, rewarded with cheering and applause. And then, the music had started, possibly a little bit edgier than your usual genre, but still catchy.
